Headcanon:
Despite how scared he can sometimes be, once Ryuji puts his mind to something, he will do ANYTHING to achieve that goal. This is seen multiple times as his brash behavior makes him not think as much about consequences as his fellows, making him the perfect person for reckless ideas. Truth be told, Ryuji is totally ruthless. The second he sees a straight path from Point A to Point B, he will run it, no matter the danger. He is one of those that is more than willing to put himself and his own personal health at risk before he allows one of the others to do the same. He will go and do exceptionally dangerous things, and the second one of the others do something similar, or even less dangerous, he is scolding them. "After all, ain't that my job to be the reckless one? Whadda hell, man?"

Ryuji often times has nightmares at night, which is why at times, he comes to school in the game looking so exhausted. Between helping his mother with household chores, and ensuring that she has proper food (or else she will forget to eat,) Ryuji also has the inability to properly sleep. Between remembering things his father did to himself and his mother, as well as the nightmares of what he ended up doing to the track team, there are simply times he cannot sleep. Despite the fact that he waves all of it off as him being a 'delinquent and just not caring enough to pay attention in class' it is evident that Sakamoto is indeed a bright young man that cannot devote himself properly due to terrors that constantly haunt him. Despite him trying to fight against the guilt, he still blames himself for everything about the track team, and though the fault was not only his own, also feels responsible for what happened to the volleyball team as well due to the fact Kamoshida was still at the school around that time. His intense focus on getting stronger is so he can protect those weaker than himself, and while he still has a long way to go on his temper (at least he has stopped punching people because they piss 'im off) he has also started working harder on his attitude, and his main reason for fighting. Protecting.

Ryuji is one of those closeted 'Comic book nerds' that keeps that side of himself hidden away. His closet is FILLED with nothing but the dreams of being a superhero, from comic books to little kid notebooks that he wrote back in elementary school with ideas for names for his superhero self. This once again leads to the fact that he wanted to help protect himself and his mother from his abusive father, but also helps cement in his mind the need for people of his age group to take matters into their own hands, and become heroes in their own rights. Of course, anyone else saw them, Ryuji would deny it. Big time. After all, normal high schoolers by day. By night... Phantom Thieves. {This can be further evidenced by the beginning of the game where he wanted a 'cool' sounding codename for the Phantom thieves. }
Headcanon: Unless it was already preplanned, or there is something serious pertaining to the Phantom Thieves, Ryuji is almost never seen out at night. I headcanon that due to his father being absent, and for the hardships he offered to his mother by decking Kamoshida, he stays at home at night unless he has clear direction of where he is going, in order to assist in easing her mind. Due to her also working several jobs, as is canon thanks to the game and the anime together, Ryuji also wants to help her when it comes to the house. Ryuji hates cleaning, so he won't scrub the place down, but he can at least make things look nice for his mother to come home to, perhaps even having part of a cooked meal ready for her. He seems to have some kind of cooking habit, even if he isn't always that good at it.
One of my headcanons is that Ryuji would never enter into the Mementos etc alone to train. He would take at least one other person with him if that was the case On top of that, he thinks of the Phantom Thieves as his club, his group, and he probably knows and understands more about teamwork than any of the others, as well as training, considering he was part of a sports group at one point . Due to that, he takes everything extremely seriously, and while he doesn't go into Mementos alone, he probably does other training, such as his 'going out behind the gym' to do laps and things like that. A more physically strong body leads to a stronger mind, and he is a full believer in that, hoping that somehow, his physical training in the main world will help lend him strength in the Cognitive worlds He also probably does cognitive training with shooting guns, helping to increase his accuracy (since his accuracy usually tends to go up the more palaces in he is) Due to his desire to not go into Mementos or to Palaces alone, Ryuji also kinda ends up fixating on the next option to allow them to go in. It isn't as much a 'people will notice us' thing, though there is that too. It's just he wants to be of some kind of use to the team outside of just fighting, so I headcanon he does some kind of sleuthing around on his own to try to find leads quite often, and since he does look like a basic juvenile delinquent with a track record (pun intended), people don't pay much of a mind to him in certain areas. Although his sleuthing is never truly shown in game, it is still something that I feel could lead to some interesting OC kind of adventures in the RP world as well; that, and it shows just how sneaky Ryuji can be, and while he lacks tact and is sometimes quite airheaded, why he is fit to be a thief. Despite being dumb as a stack of bricks when it comes to his school work, he has street smarts and experience that can only be found within the heart of a person of his life and upbringing, including the sense of comradeship he feels with everyone. I also headcanon that he is a pretty good judge of character, almost immediately warming up to Akira when they first met, and being able to gauge that certain people at certain times could not be trusted, including his ill feelings of Akechi at the very start. He's never liked Akechi, feeling that something was off as well He feels as though Akechi never gave him anything of concrete support, never showed any part of his true self like the others had, whether for better or for worse, and due to not having that heart to heart connection with him, never fully allows him into his heart, or into his friend group. In this regard, he is super similar to a character named Kisaragi Gentarou from Fourze, as Kisaragi wouldn't allow Ryusei into the KRC until the transfer student literally punched him in the face. oops
