Morcheeba (Sky Edwards)🐟🔸
[***I tried writing a somewhat "professional" info/review, but I'm not very good at this lol]
Morcheeba is one of the most important bands to come out from the Bristol underground scene during the 90s. They're considered one of the best representatives of trip-hop, a genre of electronic music that combines elements of dub and psychedelic music with jazz, folk and soul. The group was formed by Sky Edwards and the bothers Godfrey in the early 90s (now it's just Sky and Ross Godfrey), having their debut with the album Who Can You Trust? (1996).
I was watching a documentary on trip-hop on the old, chunky tv in my grandparent's basement, where I discovered the band. I was instantly enamored with their sound; it's fresh, sometimes futuristic, but also deeply connected with their funk and reggae roots. They're also very experimental, especially with technology and their instruments of choice, software, synths, and other stuff I don't understand...In an interview, Godfrey said they used "Cubase" a lot, more for creating loops and drum parts, rather than writing for keyboards.
It's always changing, you never know what to expect, even within the same album the tracks vary so much from one another. There's so much "flavour", so many textures working together at the same time...it's really hard to describe (because I'm not a professional haha), but also because they do tend to elude categorization. I think I actually prefer them to Portishead. The best thing I can do is recommend you listen to them!!
