"i'm sorry," she whispered, her hand holding his as she sat by his bedside. "i didn't know... and i should have..." she'd tried to warn them before she'd left but she should have realized what he was sooner. her eyes closed as tears pressed at her eyes. "you're going to wake up and everything's going to be ok. we need you," her voice caught as she squeezed his hand, her head dropping. "i need you," she whispered. "you're my family fitz and i can't lose you."
And despite her words, Fitz doesn’t move. The heart monitor beeps, and the ventilator whirs - FORCING Fitz’s lungs to take in air. He’s been the same way for nine days, with no signs of getting better, or WAKING UP.
Within nine days, Fitz’s heart stopped twice, and things are starting to seem worse. It’s been over a week and Fitz is showing no signs of getting better. One of the medics at the hospital suggest taking him off life support, but no one dares.
They’re not giving up on him.
And everyone seems to move in shifts, sitting by his bedside. Today, it’s Skye, sitting there and holding his hand. Today, Skye, the closest person to Fitz, his best friend, his sister, is sitting beside him and trying not to cry.
And Fitz is just... comatose.
Until his hand twitches in her grip. It isn’t much, but his fingers curl, and the heart monitor changes pace. Fitz’s hand twitches again, and a cough passes through, as he starts to come to consciousness, choking on the breathing tube in his throat.
And for the first time in nine days, Leopold Fitz opens his eyes.
