That’s absolutely baffling to me, because the thing that generally makes esports (and sports in general) work is a game that doesn’t change much over time.
Instead, Blizzard throws in new heroes, checks the play stats, makes HUGE balance changes to heroes to get people to play the ones that aren’t getting picked as often at the razor’s edge of comp mode, and generally can’t stop fucking with the game for five minutes.
And this is also a big part of why I say that Blizzard can’t FPS right: most FPS games, when they are rebalanced, slightly tweak a weapon or class’s stats. Blizzard will completely revamp a hero from top to bottom in a single update. You never know if you’re getting good with a character that’s going to be dogshit a month from now because nobody in competitive mode wants to play as Fistbot 2000 or whatever character winds up at the bottom of the pile.
