Skylar Cole is the adopted son of two wealthy Chicago doctors, both of whom wanted a child more as a symbol of status than anything else and who raised him with the help of boarding schools from a young age. He has only a few memories of his life before the adoption, knowing only that his mother died and that his father was not present. He has occasional flashes of his mother’s death, but believes them to be false memories of a murder that didn’t actually happen. The result of too many horror movies as a kid, maybe. Growing up in boarding schools meant having to follow strict rules laid down by even stricter adults, and abuse at the hands of fellow students who bullied him for most of his childhood.
He didn’t really make friends or have anything like family to bond with, and he feels cut off from people as a result. He began self-harming at 9 as a way of trying to experience some kind of emotional response to something, and continued as he got older as a way of manifesting the physical symptoms he’d started to feel that doctors said weren’t really there. As a teenager, Skylar developed stomach issues as well as chronic pain, but the doctors he saw seemed to think it was all in his head. He was also prone to sleepwalking, and that’s what landed him in a mental institution, after he woke up to find he’d set a small fire at his boarding school that quickly got out of control. People were certain he did it on purpose, but he knew that he’d never have done such a thing if he had a choice. Because of this act, he had permanent scars on his hands, and was rarely seen without the fingerless gloves he preferred to cover them up with.
While locked away, he had his first real relationship, connecting with a fellow patient and staff psychiatrist in a poly relationship that he realized very quickly was unhealthy. When his parents found out that he was in this relationship, with one partner a member of staff and the other a man, they had him moved to a different facility to finish the rest of his time. It shocked him, because his parents had seldom cared about anything he did, and he realized that, of course, this was all about appearances.
When he left the facility, he decided to move to New York City on his own, taking the trust fund his mother’s parents had set up in his name to help him survive while he tried to figure out what to do with his life. After a confrontation with his family in Chicago, he didn’t hear from them often, refusing to contact them himself. Once in the city, he started to do some freelance writing for a few websites he enjoyed, taking online classes that interested him as he tried to sort himself out. He reconnected with Riley Shepherd and Charity Devereux, two former patients of the first facility he’d been placed in. Much to his surprise, he felt an immediate pull with Charity, like they understood each other in a way he thought perhaps no one would ever understand him. As they figure out their relationship, they travel for her work, which still allows him to write and to take classes, keeping New York as the home they return to. Sometimes, Skylar does open mics, singing just to keep up with it. He’s thought about auditioning, but he’s not sure he has the energy for Broadway. He’s content to sing for Charity or on a tiny stage, where no one knows who he is, but they seem to like his performances.
