It was late, too late for anyone to be wandering the training grounds below their master’s fortress. In the glorified cells behind him the others slept, but Slade couldn’t. Tomorrow he would fight, and tomorrow he would send yet another man to an early grave. His body was littered with scars, his arms and chest left exposed as he sat with his elbows on his knees. Dark eyes remained fixed on the dim glow of the fire in front of him until he heard the telltale clink of the heavy iron door that led up the stairs to the palace above.
“You shouldn’t be here, Jason.” Slade commented simply, he let his eyes linger on the Ra’s betrothed for longer than he should have. The guards that had accompanied him to the grounds below could easily have his tongue cut out for breathing the other’s name. Slade was a possession, a tool to be used in battle and occasionally rented for the night to the highest bidder. Ra’s had gone to great lengths to remind Slade of this time and time again. No matter how skilled he was, no matter how strong, Slade couldn’t stand alone against an army. “I’m sure the master wouldn’t want you associating with us.”
