horizon forbidden west | slaughterspine
week 2 horizontober prompt; monster 🎉 question is, who or what is the monster here and now
hi guys i desperately need some people to talk about hzd and hfw with!!! im gonna replay both soon™ and I'm writing fan fiction rn, i just need some community :3
Most other therians: "oh yeah I got some pretty neat theriotypes!" Canine, feline, avian, insect, aquatic etc
Me: "Robot Dino :3"
i like how the machines are created to help the environment stabilization or machine renewal, while still being animal adjacent! you get a sense that they fit into the world and that there is a point to all of their existences too. scrappers collect scrap obviously, ravagers and watchers protect convoys and machines, tall necks maintain the network instead of a stupid tower, snapmaws and tiderippers for water purification, glinthawks and stormbirds for air purification, grazers and lancehorns work the soil, tramplers and rideable machines to disperse plant life and increase habitat heterogeneity etc. but there are some which unfortunately I can’t figure out an in-universe reason to exist - like what on earth is the purpose of the slaughterspine?
“BUILT TO KILL” 🔥🔥🔥🔥
For whatever disappointments I have in HZD2’s story the machines were awesome, and the Slaughterspine stands out especially as badass.
Lorewise, this is the apex of Hephaestus’ efforts to make a man killer. For those not into the lore as much, basically Hephaestus has to learn from the ground up how to make combat machines since originally it was made to preserve Earth life (still is, but humans piss it the fuck off for trashing its machines), so that’s why many lack traditional guns, missiles or regular forms of weapons since Hephaestus was never programmed to know how to make those.
It’s been steadily learning, adapting, and figuring out which features of its robots are the best at killing humans. The Slaughterspine is the apex of this for now, it’s completely deviated from environmental preservation or care like the other machines are, it’s made solely for one thing: killing as many people as possible.
I also love all the Shin Godizlla references like with the splitting jaw and purple plasma breath attack. I mean maybe that is a reach to say it was an intended reference but I mean its spine glows purple and its fight gimmick is that it charges up with energy before going all out.
