He hadn’t been here since his return, too busy with -
No, not really. The alpha running around wreaking havoc wasn’t a good enough excuse for not taking the time to visit his family’s crypt. He should have brought Laura here, she deserved to be with them. But it had seemed too dangerous, there would have been too many questions, and he had been aching enough as it was. At least like this, she would have been close to home.
Not that it had mattered anyway. Those damn kids had gone and dug her up, Derek had been arrested for suspicion of her murder, and the only good thing that had come from it was that he could clear things up about her identity. And that she was finally here now - all of her.
The ache about it still sat deep in his chest, like a dull throb of pain that never quite went away. It wasn’t as sharp and consuming as it had been after the fire, almost like... almost...
You’re getting used to it.
Not that he had any more family members left to lose now.
A quiet, frustrated breath left him and he lowered his head, gaze finally pulling away from the four-lettered name engraved over the entrance to the crypt. He wanted to turn away and leave, but a soft sound reaching his ears made him still. Footsteps in the grass, still a couple of hundred meters away. Fabric rustling softly with the movements.
Who the hell was out here at this time of night?
Derek tipped his head to the side, listening, nostrils flaring subtly to see if he could catch a scent or, eventually, a glimpse out of the corner of his eye.
