Afghan War and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Saw a patient recently that works as a civilian attached to the military in Afghanistan. The patient lives on base with the U.S. military and almost nightly is awakened to the sound of rockets overhead, has to jump out of bed and quickly run to the bomb shelter until the rocket attack is over. I listened to a recording of a home sleep study the other day that had dogs howling in the background picked up by the snore microphone the patient was wearing. What were the chances that this patients previous sleep study conducted in the quiet but foreign environment of a sleep lab duplicated her home environment and accurately measured a routine nights sleep? Sometimes it is important to encounter a patient in their own environment before diagnosis and treatment. Don't get me wrong.
