In the end, it’s Doc that finds him and patches him up. He takes Donut back to his place and looks him over, declaring that he’ll definitely live. The armor took most of the force of the bullet, leaving the wound shallow, and as long as it doesn’t get infected, Donut will be right as rain.

Only a day later, he comes down with a fever.

Or: Donut comes down with a fever that worsens his hearing. Doc helps him through it.
