Dusk settled over the valley like blue fog – slow and heady, the light fading into the canopy. She’d set up camp by the water: a tent on a decent patch of grass, a small bonfire set up near the riverbed, logs steady on the rocks. The river had worn itself down into an almost quiet creek, water flowing unhurried over the smooth stones.
Flames ate away at the wood, embers sparking into the evening air. She’d set up her two chairs, more than aware that she’d likely get company: Sloan had a way of finding her, no matter how deep into the woods she went. Deliberately, she’d chosen a spot that didn’t typically have a lot of wildlife frequenting it – whatever fish were caught in the slow-moving river would already be lost to pools further up, and though she’d seen a few deer while in the area, their trail was located further down.
“Hey, you,” she said, as she caught sight of her guest.
“Shift going slow, or did you run into somethin'?”
