The Latest Changes in South Australian Gambling Regulations
The South Australia government’s spokespeople have recently declared that they are going to amend the internet gambling bill, following a meeting held between Attorney-General John Rau, crossbenchers and the Opposition. Amendments designed to assist gambling-addicted individuals and measures which were supposed to introduce screen-warning messages and monitoring of risk have been removed by the Opposition from the current bill. Furthermore, the Opposition also cut off measures which would have allowed “major” venues to house a maximum of 60 poker machines instead of 40.
On the contrary, the Government has succeeded in lowering maximum poker machines bet limits from $10 to $5. Opposition treasury spokesman Iain Evans explained that small-business owners are concerned about the impact these new amendments might have on them, saying that changes in the bill will only bring benefits to large gambling clubs. Evans explained that until today, the government has not revealed how the measures changed the pubs and clubs in the area and that is the reason why the Opposition was against these amendments. On the contrary, Rau commented that this is an important step for the state parliament in order to pass the bill.
