Sleep paralysis is no joke, y’all

As we get closer and closer to the holidays and the end of the year, it gets harder and harder to find new scary movie trailers to review. This newsletter might be scaled back to once every other week, instead of every week. But we’ll see. Don’t be scared. I’m still here. And there’s still plenty of spooky things for me to talk to you about. In fact, last week in celebration of the anniversary of the first A Nightmare On Elm Street movie, I made a list of all my favorite Freddy quotes.You can check them out here. And for this week’s review? I”ll be reviewing Slumber.

Let's get into the nitty gritty...

The premise: Like any decently terrifying scary movie, Slumber is about a child. This little boy is experiencing sleep paralysis, and his parents are trying to figure out why. They take him to a sleep specialist (doctor?) who does not seem at all trustworthy to me. They do sleep studies on the boy, and some weird old guy in a hotel room tells the parents that the sleep paralysis is actually being caused by a demon known as The Nightmare. Spooooky.

The music: Sprinkled throughout the child is what sounds like a child’s voice singing, and it’s SUPER creepy. There’s also the typical ominous tones sprinkled throughout, and they’re especially loud when the weird old guy is talking about The Nightmare.

Other spooky observations: Anything with small children always gets me, always creeps me out way more than anything else. This movie has a lot of actors that I haven’t seen before, which is cool. The only actress I recognize is the sleep specialist, and again, I don’t trust her.

The verdict: 3/5 ghosties. I feel like the horror industry is trying REALLY hard to do something different, and I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Children possessed by a nightmare demon? Okay, I’m in.
