Slumberwood was a multimedia project, so to speak. A lot of the players could be found on Facebook and Twitter, and Sheridan even had a Tumblr (at @pixystixaddict-blog). A lot of the Facebook interactions between the players were simply trolling, referencing a weird bot that told you which of your FB friends to eat that day (which got rigged to always be Corbin, hence the whole thread involving that), and just being generally annoying to one another. I got way too into this.
Slumberwood was a thing once...
When I was in undergrad (2007-2011), I was really into college baseball. I decided that I might as well create my own fictional college baseball team and do a comic covering the main character’s four years playing there, and thus, Slumberwood was born. Although I was really into it during my time in undergrad, nothing ever materialized with it, although the popularity of Check, Please! made me reconsider going back to it from time to time.
Anyway, here’s some important elements:
The main character was 5′6″ left-handed second baseman Justin Pedrotti, loosely inspired by Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Everyone called him ‘Drotti. He was from Chatham, MA, where his parents ran a B&B and his grandfather was a former fisherman. When his grandfather died in 2009, ‘Drotti inherited his fishing vessel, the Hopewell, in the will and therefore had a boat. He was also very fond of Campbell’s chicken noodle soup and using Facebook apps that declared weird things like which of your FB friends you should eat that day (a recurring joke being that he almost always rigged it until he got upperclassman Corbin Worcester).
‘Drotti’s best friend at Slumberwood was the other half of the middle infield, also left-handed shortstop Sheridan Travers, who had been raised in an orphanage in East Providence, Rhode Island with no knowledge of his birth parents. Although he was intellectually prodigious (including teaching himself Japanese as a teenager), no one adopted him because of various issues that were later revealed to be an autism diagnosis he was reluctant to tell anyone about due to stigma. Sheridan was how I was working through my own diagnosis (received in 2009) and he’s still very important to me as a result - I figured a lot of things out through him. He had a love of baseball manga (hence why he taught himself Japanese - to read it), Pixy Stix, and annoying the team’s first baseman, Aidan Addison and used his knowledge of Japanese to communicate with the team’s center fielder, Noburu Fujioka, without the opposing team knowing, allowing them to coordinate double steals.
Speaking of Sheridan, he also served as my fictional boyfriend on Facebook for a few years. I told people at the time that it was a joke to see how many people would think he was real, but the reality was that there was a creepy, annoying guy in the Civil War minor who tried to hit on a lot of girls so I put Sheridan there to keep him away if he looked at my profile. Sheridan served in this role for about three years. We’re just friends now, of course.
[Sheridan, as drawn...a few minutes ago. He was cute. He’d be 32 now if he was a real person. That’s weird to think about. I like to think he went on to work for a company like Boston Dynamics and made terrifyingly good robots to continue freaking people out.]
The first baseman, Aidan Addison, was so prone to developing side effects from medication that he was studying to be a pharmaceutical researcher to figure out why. Somehow, I developed a habit of tagging him as random objects from museums on Facebook, including most notably a Chinese ritual food container known as a ding ( 鼎 ). To this day, I’m not sure how that happened or why. Sheridan also loved to annoy him. It was a big part of their friendship. Aidan’s medical expertise actually served to keep Sheridan and his own diagnosis safe; despite Sheridan’s insistence in being irritating on purpose Aidan looked out for him and his sensory issues.
The third baseman, Corbin Worcester, was a retro gamer who was obsessed with statistics and was absolutely inspired by Sam Fuld. He was also the only right-handed infielder on the team. (Also, according to Facebook, he should be eaten.)
It was actually a joke because it’s extremely rare to find a shortstop or a second baseman who play the position left-handed due to how the game works; first basemen are more likely to be left-handed. To make Slumberwood extra weird I inverted things and made both ‘Drotti and Sheridan left-handed.
One of the relief pitchers on the team was a vampire and nobody questioned this.
Another relief pitcher was narcoleptic. At one point he had a syncope after a particularly emotional strikeout and Aidan had to rush to his aid.
Sheridan had a joking obsession with the Square One TV feature Angle Dance and enjoyed impersonating the lead singer’s facial expressions to freak people out.
Sheridan and Noburu’s scheme to speak to each other in Japanese to coordinate double steals was caught when they played against a team who had a pitcher who was just as much of a weeb as Sheridan was.
On that note, Sheridan affectionately addressed Noburu as Nobu-kun. Noburu affectionately referred to Sheridan as a weeb.
The team had at least one bonded, exclusive battery because I was (and still am) obsessed with Oofuri.
In the first year, the team’s only catcher was a senior and he recruited his successor by finding him playing Wiffleball.
At one point during one of the team’s College World Series runs, the coach had a heart attack and was hospitalized, forcing Corbin’s girlfriend Katie Wilmuts to coach the team. She did spectacularly well, of course, because Katie had started a women’s baseball program at Slumberwood with a few other girls, notably Noburu’s younger sister Mayumi.
In retrospect, this whole thing was just...there was a lot of weirdness going on, but it was fun and that’s all that matters. And honestly, these kids still warm my heart, even though they’re now off in their adult lives doing whatever it is they studied to do.
