This is pretty self-explanatory. Lengthy static shots of mostly empty roads across America, only the surrounding noise accompanying the image. But somehow its a strangely enveloping experience and one of the most calming and atmospheric. I think having some music accompanying it helped, but there's just the simplicity of just watching a landscape and seeing the little details: the passing clouds, the sound of the wind, a car or two passing by maybe even a wandering person. The appeal for James Benning's work is very specific but I think its something I can absolutely get behind.

When Andy and I lived together in Santa Cruz, California in 1986-1988, one of our favorite TV shows was the Bay Area Backroads. Jerry Graham was the host of KRON-TV’s Bay Area Backroads from 1985 – 1993. (It turns out that the show continued non-stop until 2008 with Doug McConnell as the host after Jerry Graham retired.)
