hey quinn! I assume you're a frequenter of concerts, and I've only been on like. one open-air maybe? I don't recall, honestly, but I wanna go to more concerts in smaller venues (support your local artists!) do you have any tips on how to prepare, mentally/physically? should I or should I not bring a backpack, I've heard conflicting info
Hey! Great question…
Some Tips for Small Concert Venues!!!
Know the area! If you’re worried about being unfamiliar with a space or neighborhood, check it out during the day sometime if you can. A lot of small venues double as coffee shops or art galleries, etc.
You don’t have to go it alone! If you get anxiety doing things solo, bring a friend and/or partner
Protect your ears! Invest in a set of reusable ear plugs
Take breaks! if you’re a person who stands during shows, sit down once in a while. You’ll thank yourself the next day
Minimize what you bring! If you need a bag, bring a small bag. Most places discourage backpacks. If there’s some reason you absolutely need a backpack, I would lean toward a smaller clear backpack. Clear bags are usually a safe bet
Hydrate! Bring a reusable water bottle (most places these days allow them)
Meet other people! Most small venues have local crowds, and I have made so many friends just by starting conversations like “who are you most excited to see?” or “I like your shirt”
Don’t stay if you’re uncomfortable! This tip honestly applies to all facets of life. I have left concerts, sporting events, and all sorts of other things just because I or someone I’m with is physically or mentally uncomfortable. It doesn’t matter how much money was spent. Or if we just got there. No one should have to voluntarily be uncomfortable. Taking care of ourselves is paramount. There will always be another show or event to go to. Anyone who pressures us to “suck it up” or power through discomfort is not the kind of person I want to be around!!
Have fun! Self-explanatory (I hope)
