I never read either of those things, though I think I encountered them at a distance! With the first one it may have been another case of "this doesn't have any kids or girls as the main characters, I'll pass". I think I found a lot of my Wizard Books by perusing the lists of "if you like harry potter..." books that librarians constantly handed me as a kid, and those books were mostly written between 1990-2003 and so ruled out a lot of the older fantasy series. I managed to get into Madeline L'Engle and Diana Wynne Jones through the recommendations of librarians. I think I should probably read The Mists of Avalon at some point to know what it's like.
