SIDEWALKS by Veleria Luiselli (Translated from the Spanish by Christina MacSweeney) "A writer is a person who distributes silences and empty spaces." Valeria Luiselli is a traveler in search. In this collection of essays, she searches for Joseph Brodskey's tomb. She searches for the connection she once had to possessions while unpacking after a move. She searches for meaning in the brief conversations she has with a doorman during cigarette breaks. She searches for understanding regarding a seemingly meaningless and isolated murder that becomes nothing more than a statistic to most. Most of all, she searches for the elusive self and what it means to be a fluid, changing person in a stuttering world. There are more literary references in this book than a research paper... Duras, Beckett, Benjamin, Barthes, Creeley... the list goes on. These names and quotes would seem like a litany of literary name-dropping if wielded by a lesser writer, but Luiselli uses these fragments that have become a part of her as only a starting point to express her own unique point of view. Her interpretations and elaborations provide the reader with an authentic voice that is both new and relatable. While the essays in this collection are short and meandering, subjects tend to loop back and revisit prior thoughts with an unfolding power that shows us she is...and we are always learning and building on the core of ourselves. SIDEWALKS is an introduction to a powerful new voice in Latin American literature from someone who recognizes and relates that our external experiences (other people, places, objects) are not separate, but an influential part of what makes up our identities. And that travel and search within the world is a changing experience for us all if we remain open to it...if we treat the silences and empty spaces with as much reverence as the ones filled with excitement.
