sometimes ilya tells shane summaries of russian classic literature. everytime shane's eyebrows climbs higher. until he hears that at age 10 ilya at school had read about how a deaf man had to drown his dog* he mumbles:
"yeah, baby, i know about your mom, but it feels like you didn't have a chance to NOT have a depression"
*"Mumu" is a short story by Ivan Turgenev, children usually read it in 5th grade (age 10-11).
