One of my favorite Bay Area bands is Neutrals. Allan McNaughton's (originally from Scotland) vocals and songwriting is amazing. "Gary Borthwick Says" is one of my favorite songs of 2022.

I'm a bit surprised that there isn't more interest around Giant Haystacks - McNaughton's band prior to Neutrals. Over four years ago we highlighted a compilation from this band. I'm just returning to plead with you to give Giant Haystacks a listen - yes this band is a little more Minutemen and less Mick Trouble or Television Personalities, but still just great.

Discogs does have some of their vinyl output (SmartGuy Records) while the Bandcamp page has only CDs.

I can't get enough of Rat Columns lately! This song, from their recently released 'Sceptre Hole' LP, is a proper jangling gem. It packs the same wonderful and violent strumming of, say, contemporaries Girl Names. Gedge would be proud of both of them. Elsewhere on 'Sceptre Hole' Rat Columns travel though well-paced noisy haze and stark soundscapes, but they always come back for a few moments of quickly-strummed pop brilliance.
