Celebrate with an escape room adventure at SmartyPantz

Add a scary escape room adventure to Halloween this year Filled with zombies, ghouls and every frightening character imaginable, Halloween is the scariest time of year and this year, Halloween fans can add some extra scary fun to their celebration with an escape room adventure at SmartyPantz.

SmartyPantz has two ghoulish puzzles that make for a perfect Halloween adventure. In Thirst For Murder, players find themselves locked in a serial killer’s basement which they must escape before the killer returns home for bloodthirsty murders of his “guests”. The skulls and bones of players who didn’t make it are a constant reminder that time is precious!

Morning Never Comes sets players the challenge of solving a murder mystery in a haunted house before the clock strikes midnight, releasing an terrifying ghost out to avenge its earthly murder. SmartyPantz Escape Rooms are located at 289 Abbott St. in the heart of Gastown, so they can be combined easily into a full night of Halloween celebrations. So, whether it means getting away from ghosts or a foiling a serial killer, tackling an Escape Room challenge is a novel way to add some scary fun to the Halloween season.

Singles Night launches at Smartypantz Escape Rooms on August 4th

Escape Rooms are a fun and exciting group activity, but what happens when you’re the only one from your group of friends who wants to play? Singles Night at Smartypantz Escape Rooms is what happens.

Starting on August 1st and continuing on the first Tuesday of every month, Smartpantz will be inviting teamless players to try their luck and skill with a group of other single players who’ve signed up for the night’s adventures. The Smartypantz team will build the teams and assign them to one of the five Escape Rooms available to be solved.

  There’s no doubt that players will want to get to know more about their new teammates, but with just 45 minutes to get through the challenging puzzle rooms, they’ll want to keep the introductions to teammates quick and save the small talk and until after they’ve finished playing.

“We’ve had a bunch of requests and questions from single players who’d like to try our escape rooms”, said Chris Ricard Chief Fun Officer at Smartypantz, “and a Singles Night seemed like a great way for interested players to meet some like-minded people and take on these challenges.

  The first Singles Night will take place at 8pm on Tuesday, August 4th and players can grab a spot by emailing [email protected] or by turning up at 8. There’s no easy way to escape being single, but now there’s a simple way to solve the problem of being a single escape room player!

Escape to Smartypantz in Gastown

“…Would you like to play a game?” comes to mind when thinking  of escape rooms. And I had been so curious to try one since I learned of these interactive puzzles.

    Finally, I was going to test my problem solving abilities in the Thirst for Murder room at Smartypantz. Rated to be one of the most difficult and frightening of the puzzles. You have 45 minutes and a walkie-talkie which you may use to receive two clues through your endeavors. Being a fan of horror movies and video games, I couldn’t wait.  I went in a group of four, and we walked in quite sure of ourselves. We left more dissapointed in ourselves than expected. We were moments away from cracking our final lock and escaping when our time ran out. I immediately wanted another chance. And to try more of the rooms. The room was wonderfully decorated with an incredible amount of attention to detail. Down to the hair stuck to the bloody hammer. Really my favourite prop in the place. Great creep out factor. Our room seemed to focus on combo locks and finding keys. But if trying to escape a psychopath’s torture chamber isn’t your cup of tea, Don’t fret! I really can’t recommend this place enough. Such an unusual concept and Smartpantz puts such a great amount of detail and care into decorating their rooms, it really is a wonderful experience. If you’re looking for something different than your usual outting, this is the thing for you.

Escaping from a room, under pressure

(Day 2)

So we just watched The Imitation Game (which I would highly recommend), and I think that’s a pretty good intro to this next challenge.

You know that part where they’re in a room trying to figure out the codes and use clues to basically win a war?  Yea, well that’s what we’ll be doing.  My amazing visiting aussie friend found this super cool thing called Smartypantz in gastown that basically has a bunch of rooms with different scenarios where you have an hour to figure out all the clues so that you can get out.  The scenarios range from being stuck in a submarine, getting murdered by a cannibalistic psychopath, to being in a paranormal activity house (are you kidding me??). 

I don’t know what could be scarier. 

I’m not sure if I mentioned that I have a terrible, terrible fear of horror.  I have watched a total of one horror movie in my life (the Ring) and have never since watched another.  Even when horror movie ads come up on tv, I have to either shut my eyes or plug my ears (often both) just to avoid it (yes, I'm a chicken).  So needless to say that while this challenge seemed super exciting, it was also one of the scariest things I could do.

So with this in mind, we signed up for it with two other friends.  We did however avoid the absolutely, piss-inducing terrifying ones for fear of our mental well - being and general sanity.  But we did sign up for a very legitimate scenario where you have an hour to break into a Nazi’s office to get secret papers (we were hoping The Imitation Game would prep us well for this beforehand).  If this isn’t something out of a scary movie, I don’t know what is. 

Arriving at Smartypantz (finding it was already the first challenge), we were quickly introduced to our scenario: you’re working for the secret forces to infiltrate and obtain an important folder in under 45mins.  

What happened next was a flurry of rummaging, yelling, team work and frustration.  Clues were hard to find, red herrings brought us down the wrong paths and it was ridiculously fun. 

In the end, we came SO close to solving it, enough so that our frustrations were many when our time was up.  But overall it was an amazing experience with some amazing people.  Not only did it cure me of my fear of being stuck in a locked room under pressure, it taught me that sometimes failure is ok as long as you learned something (and had fun) in the process.

Escape Room puzzles and challenges arrive in downtown Vancouver

  SmartyPantz, Downtown Vancouver’s first Escape Room, is set to launch mid-January in the heart of Gastown. Occupying 3200 square feet across three Heritage buildings at 289 Abbott Street, SmartyPantz is raising the bar for the Escape Room experience with film-level room decor and start-to-finish interactive entertainment under the watchful eye of RU1, the iconic, super-intelligent chimp games master.

  The experience starts from the moment guests arrive, giving the secret password to enter the building. In the waiting room, they are immersed in the puzzle and problem-solving experience with classic analog brainteasers and giant-sized games.  Not to mention the 50’s inspired salon hair dryer chairs.

  Once they’re admitted to the room, clues, hints and puzzles are hidden throughout, leading them toward the final solution. The difficulty level for the rooms ranges from moderate to diabolical, and many times guests return for multiple attempts to try and solve the puzzle.

Working with expert consultants from the film and gaming industries, the SmartyPantz team has developed distinct puzzle rooms with detailed room decoration and inventive game play.

  The first set of five SmartyPantz Rooms are:

The Meat Locker, where guests must escape a serial killer’s basement

Spy vs Spy, a WWII-themed detective mystery, get in and get out

Dream’scape, a strange distorted dreamlike room which challenges players to find the way to “wake up”

Doomed Sub, a claustrophobic Submarine adventure where your O2 is running out fast

Haunted Study, a ghostly murder mystery to be solved.

  There are already more SmartyPantz challenges in the works and the rooms will be replaced with new adventures on a regular basis.
