😭 angst or sad WIP snippet
Have some Redge existential angst!
Emptiness. It was all that remained, and all that there ever was.
Well, no. Not necessarily. Only if that man was to be believed.
And yet, it was hard to not believe him.
Rouge couldn’t tell if she had any memories to recover at all, so what did that make her? Who did that make her? What was there to become, who was there to be?
The numbness took over as she trudged out of the mess of lights and sounds of the big city, her eyes flickering despondently between smaller residential buildings and businesses as she, Shadow and Omega made their way over to the railways and the rocky canyon in the distance. The other two might have been talking, but Rouge didn’t hear a word, too wrapped up in the implications of what Dr. Eggman had said to her.
I have no memories. I never had memories.
Her fingers raised and traced along her left arm where the bullet had hit her, back on Seaside Hill. She didn’t bleed. She didn’t have memories. She could easily lift three tons with her wings alone.
Who am I, if I’m not the Rouge that Shadow thinks I am? What am I?
She wasn’t blind; she had seen the horrified and uneasy look in his eyes as he reappraised her after the doctor’s exit. He seemed to be taking the reveal even worse than Rouge was, especially now, when the shock had subsided and he remained on edge while she was feeling remarkably calm, even though her mind was in a flurry. The idea of being an impostor was equally as terrifying and plausible as being Rouge.
But it always came back to the same thought.
I have to be someone.
So… maybe she needed to build herself from the ground up, if she had no memories to recover.
Her eyes started roaming the buildings again, but this time with more purpose. What caught her interest? What did she have positive or negative feelings toward?
Tall, imposing buildings with bright neon signs? …Too flashy, not to her tastes.
Small shops with bright colors and peeling paint, their windows covered in posters? …Too busy.
Simple buildings, minimal but functional decor? …That was nice. Easy to understand and not get trapped in.
The color grey? …Well, it worked on her jumpsuit, so it seemed to work for her.
Her lists grew longer as she found the rails heading toward the canyon, frowning as she meticulously categorized everything she came across. To her displeasure, it seemed as though most things fell into the “disliked” or “neutral” categories… it seemed as though decoration wasn't her forte.
