So, N4 lore dump, I guess.
Okay, something to remember is that I like to think of SMG4’s universe as its own entity, existing entirely inside Luke’s computer (can you tell that the Genesis Arc was my favorite yet?). ANYWAY—
The idea behind N4 is that he’s not supposed to exist. He was originally intended to be the boss instead of Niles and SMG0 in the Genesis Arc, but his design was scrapped and put into a storage drive for later use. He was never used, and by complete accident, he ended up in the SMG4 universe when his file and model were accidentally dropped into it. He knows he’s not supposed to be there—he is fully aware that he wasn’t meant to ever really exist, and he feels the burden of not being able to exist in a world that needs him.
Then there’s N5, his counterpart. Originally named N3, but quickly renamed after being scrapped, he was meant to be N4’s partner. In the Genesis Arc, he would have helped N4 corrupt everything in that universe. N5 was never as fleshed out as N4, mainly because the idea of N4 having an opposite counterpart was a last-minute draft made by Luke to make the arc more interesting. Therefore, N5 is often confused and spacey, not really going anywhere or interacting with anyone.
When they both landed, they had only one pod since they were designed to be a single enemy.
(Spoiler: you can’t even really call them SMGs because they are made out of pure Anti-Meme energy. They only have the power to control other corrupted memes, and they can’t use them to make weapons like the other SMGs or to help Mario. Because of this, they aren’t *really* SMGs.)
When they landed, they knew something was off. The world didn’t feel right or ready, and N4 already knew about the existence of the plot line he was never used in. He is fully aware that they are all just characters in a story being told to a wider audience, but he has no way to show that to others. He can’t even put it into his own words—he can’t describe what it’s like knowing that you exist,
Without holding a real solid form, so he just doesn’t, he’s resigned himself to try and make the world feel right,
How? Well by trying to start up his plot line again! Collecting all corrupt memes and slowly starting to infect everything with his power like he was scripted to do, N5 DIDNT join him this time, maybe it’s because N5 wasn’t part of that plot line but N3 was, he runs and meet the SMG4 crew where they question his existence.
After it becomes noticeable that N4 is actually starting to corrupt the world to the point of destruction they decide to do something about it.
Cue N5 and N4 has a lovely heartfelt speech to each other about how change is scary but nothing can go forward without, we are not what were made to be but rather what we make our self to be,
N4 is able to be talked down and through tears explains that he is horrified that he is no one in a world where he is a literal accident and N5 and him end up walking away together (probably to be seen again in another side episode)
