"You're staring again."
Jaren blinked, his eyes opening to become fixated once again on the man sitting in front of him. A glance down the end of the table gave him the confirmation no one was paying attention, so he looked back and shrugged. "No one's noticed." His voice was too cool for John to accept it as an apology, which is what Jaren was trying to pass it as.
John kept his voice hushed, just under the noise of the table and quiet that Anthony couldn't hear it from the foot of space between them. He leaned a bit over the table as precaution for that. "But they could," he argued, just loud enough for Jaren to pick it up and contain a chuckle by gripping the table.
He couldn't help it. John really thought there friend's hadn't noticed?
"John, I could kiss you and none of them would bat an eye," Jaren responded, after clearing his throat to calm his voice. "Jaren," he mumbled back, exasperation in his tone. He didn't want to argue. "Just... Please," he gestured, and leaned back.
A frown crossed Jaren's face, but he agreed silently and turned his head towards the conversation. As he did, he caught a glimpse of Evan's eyes on him but he didn't quite know if that was his mind playing tricks on him or not.
Dinner ended and the group headed out, talking and laughing between. Jaren hung near the back, where John would usually keep him company, but he was upfront near Tyler instead.
Evan lingered nearby him though, which would be fine if it weren't for how oddly quiet he was being. It felt stiff, like there was just something he wanted to say but couldn't.
Finally, he stopped. And, with that, so did Jaren. The group went on ahead and they fell behind, left on their own.
Evan located a bench and they sat together in silence for a minute or two as they gathered their thoughts.
"You wanna hear a secret?" Evan asked softly, pressing his thumbs together lightly. Jaren shot him a quick glance before looking at his feet. "Id you feel like sharing," he decided to say. It felt better than asking; do you trust me enough?
Evan nodded a bit and he sat up straight. "Me and Brian are dating," he stated. Jaren choked on his spit and he sat up. "Eh?" he couldn't form words, so he decided sound would do. "You heard me," Evan shrugged a bit and smiled. "And none of you knew," he added with a smug smile.
Jaren really couldn't believe it. "But... But- no. That can't be right," he looked at Evan in disbelief, "it'd be more believable to say you were dating Jon!" Evan nodded. "Yep. But, that'd be lying."
"Lying," Jaren breathed. He was being dramatic, but this news was shocking. He earned it. "Yeah. Cause I'm dating, Bri. Keep up Jare," he patted his shoulder and then shook his head. "I'm telling you this though because I noticed the way you've been looking at John," Evan explained.
"I used to give Brian the same looks. Yknow, absolute longing and desire to just come out and get it over with and yada yada-- I know you know it," Evan gestured and Jaren just nodded. "So you know," Jaren mumbled and he put his face in his hands. "I didn't actually think you guys knew..."
Evan snickered. "No one else does, stupid. Our friends are pretty oblivious," he shrugged. "But-- and stop getting me off track! But, I want you to realize that John has a right to be a little scared. You need to try hard to respect that, I learned the hard way too."
Jaren frowned and he nodded as he dropped his hands. "Is this just a Canadian thing?" He asked with a grumble, "It feels like it is." Evan laughed and he stood up, offering Jaren a hand. "It probably is. But, even so, you'll get over it. Trust me, okay?"
It was hard to not agree.
