Smile gags, choking on the black magic filling his lungs, drowning in the poison conjured by Dragonboy. He didn't expect the attack. He used his own familiar, a hyena called Payback, to rebound the spell into Smile. It drips from the hyena's gaping jaws too. Somehow it cackles past the poison, delighted in his pain. Smile's going to lose this fight. He can see it in the cruel gleam in Dragonboy's eyes. He's not going to dismiss the spell when Smile passes out. He doesn't care. He's going to kill him.

Fur brushes his ankles and if Smile had the breath to do anything he'd urge his bunny away.

Please don't hurt him. Anyone but him.

The fur disappears. Smile wants to cry. He can't even see where he went. All he can see is the sludge falling from his lips. All he can feel is the foreign magic plaguing his body, drowning him on dry land.

And then, someone holds out a hand. His skin is pale and so is the jacket he's wearing, but there's bold red fabric lining in his suit cuffs.

Payback goes silent. Even the black goo seems to freeze midair.

The hand lands on his bruised cheek. It's gentle. Another hand lifts into view. With a crisp *snap* of fingers the black magic disappears.

Smile gasps in fresh air then chokes and hunches over to cough. The stranger- His handsome shy stalker rubs his back with one hand as he recovers. He can't help but grab onto one pristine white pant leg as he coughs. He doesn't want him slipping away. Not after this. His bunny isn't at his ankles. Smile wants to cry.

"X," Payback whimpers, prostrating itself before the stranger. "Please, mercy," it begs. The stranger, X, stares down at the shaking hyena but his grey eyes are cold. Dragonboy sneers. Before he can open his mouth again, X snaps once again. Magic bursts from his finger tips. Payback cries in despair as its fearsome form is reduced to the lowly form of a chihuahua, and its summoner Dragonboy is transformed and shrunk into nothing more than a fragile paper doll. Payback shakes as it scoops up the paper doll with its magic and bolts.

Smile takes in this... X. His handsome shy stalker. He's averted his gaze. Pretending to watch Dragonboy and his familiar's retreat. Smile takes in his side profile. There's a blush on his cheeks and the tip of his nose. Cute.

… Just like his shy little bunny.

His eyes are drawn by a twitch on top of X's head. He reaches out of habit and pets his hand down smooth fur before he realizes what he's doing. He freezes.

X freezes too.

X has rabbit ears. White, long, and droopy. Pinned back so they blend into his hair. They're soft. Familiar.

"Bunbun?" Smile whispers.

The first time his soulmate speaks to him, Smile nearly bursts into tears!

Okay-

That's a lie.

He absolutely burst into tears.

Happy tears!

His voice is soft but masculine. A bit flat in tone, but not harsh. It's deeper than Smile imagined a tiny bunny rabbit could manage, but this is his familiar and he does have magic even if he pretends otherwise.

Smile had just put him down at the entrance of their dorm. He takes a step, forgetting to take off his shoes. It's a bad habit of his.

There's a huff and a scolding, "Smile."

Smile freezes.

There's no one else with access to his dorm. Tiny teeth nip at his ankles and he stumbles back with a yelp. Smile blinks when he lands on his butt. His dear blinks bat at him not even playing innocent. His tiny little mouth opens.

"Smile," the voice repeats. "Take off your shoes."

Smile scoops him up into his arms and bursts into wet happy sobs.

"You can talk!" Smile blubbers, "I'm so happy!"

His bunny sighs but doesn't struggle out of his hug. Instead Smile swears he feels his little tsundere snuggle in.

[X and Smile are dating. They have a dinner reservation to introduce Smile's estranged daughter to his new boyfriend. It's interrupted by the assassin Rock sent after her]

X doesn't know how Smile talked him into this.

(That's a lie. He does.)

Smile is lucky X likes him so much (something Smile would happily shout to the world, much to X's embarrassment). Otherwise there's no way X would be dressed up in a fancy suit with a reservation to a high end restaurant. Smile, the man of the hour, reaches up and X catches his hand before he can adjust his collar for the fifth time in ten minutes. The usually cheery hero is a ball of nerves. For once he's not in eye-catching yellow, or his unsubtle (though cute) attempt at a disguise. He's in a sharp black suit to match X.

X put his foot down after agreeing to this and he's only glad Smile knows his measurements so he didn't have to take him to a tailor.

There's a new student on campus. Or perhaps not a student. He doesn't wear the uniform. He wears a tie, but it's an eye catching red. He has glasses but they're tinted yellow. Smile hasn't spotted him many times, but if he had to describe him simply it'd be: white.

His clothes are white. His hair is white. Other than the warm bursts of accent color, Smile would think he's being followed by a very pale shadow. He seems afraid to be seen, but from the glimpses he's caught Smile figures he has quite the handsome stalker.

He says as much to his bunbun and giggles when they shove their soft nose under his folded legs to hide.

Smile and X are already married by the time of the 19th hero tournament (X's second tournament). X sending Smile to the moon to defeat him is a cheeky romantic move referencing a comment he made about how everyone compares him to the sun, but he really enjoys the moon.

Smile is an established hero behind a small independent agency, so when he tells his manager he's married and not willing to do any dating or romantic publicity stunts, his manager bitches and moans but agrees. (When he then turns down showing off his spouse, saying they're very private and want to live a "normal life", his manager is confused how in the world they ended up with an affectionate extrovert like Smile.)

He was divorced for the longest time. Not going public with his relationship will at least let the fans delude themselves into thinking they have a shot with him. The HAC knows he's married which is all that matters. (There's a special note on his file that "due to his Trust and the Public believing him to be single", his spouse's name appears corrupted on his marriage license.)

The error is caused by Trust, but not Smile's. Hero X is "mysterious" and "nameless" after all.

Though they don't talk, his familiar does on occasion make their opinions very clear. They puff up when irritated and crawls into his lap to hide. They nip at Smile's ankles when he's running late and stomp happily when they get sweet treats. Smile still doesn't know their name so he's taking to calling them nicknames. Bunny, Dear, Honey, Sweetie. Each one more embarrassing than the last.

Smile delights when his names put an embarrassed little scrunch in his bunny's cute little nose or when they try to retaliate by tugging (suprisingly vicious!) at his uniform tie. His classmates try to get reactions, some more genuine than others, but his bunny acts as if they aren't there. Smile's reputation as the school's prodigy took quite the hit after the summoning but Smile is still himself and his magic prowess has him popular as ever before long. His kinder classmates appear disheartened to be snubbed by his familiar, but Smile knows their words are all his dearest can hear around them. The crueler ones, the ones that think his familiar make him a target, are easier to deal with. None of their posturing even makes his little cotton ball twitch. Smile is more than able to deal with them and he likes to think that his honey bunch knows that.

The strangest thing is that no one (not even the headmaster's) familiar will approach his sweet pea. Some of the students try to get their familiars to talk to them. Others try to make them attack them. Even just carrying them down the hall, other familiars flee. Smile gets used to it, the way the flow of traffic bends around them as familiars rush to get out of their way. He can't help but worry what it could mean.
