it’d been weeks since emily wrote her number on finn’s receipt, and she hadn’t heard from him since. not that she had noticed. she’d written her number down but it was harmless fun and they had flirted, but again, it was light and emily never expected anything to come of it. so when nothing came of it, she’d barely noticed. besides, she had better things to do with her time. she’s working the same closing shift, and the diner is nearly empty which is pleasantly surprising. she’s at the register with one of the other girls working, and they’re making plans to watch a movie next week. emily doesn’t have much in the way of friends, but she likes the girls she works with; they’ve all got the same thick skin. the bell rings signaling an entering customer, and, when she looks up, she thinks maybe she had wanted finn to call more than she realized. because she swears it’s him that’s walked through the door. she blinks, and it’s still him. so not a trick of the light. he’s alone, as he promised the last time, and she’s surprised at the clarity of her memory of their conversation. when he takes a seat, she wastes no time getting a mug and the coffee cup, still warm and half full. she ambles over to finn, and holds the mug out. “can i interest you in some coffee?” she’s surprised to see him. she’d never expected him to come back, never even expected him to dial her number.
