Braw Gigs Presents: Bruce Russell (The Dead C) / Smoke Jaguar @ Leith Depot, 28th January. Matinee Show!
Bruce Russell A practitioner in sound, who since 1987 has been a member of the Dead C. This legendary genre-dissolving New Zealand trio, mixes rock, electro-acoustics, noise and improvisation in equal measures. He has also directed two of New Zealand’s vanguard labels, Xpressway and Corpus Hermeticum. His solo guitar practice reconfigures the blues as a form of improvisational auto-destruction – not for nothing has he been described as ‘the Jimi Hendrix of no-technique’. He is also a noted rock critic and published author. Smoke Jaguar Like 'cortez the killer' xeroxed into punk-rock oblivion, everyone needs massive repeat-riff blowouts showered with live scuzz and electric shards, sweat on the walls and blistering feedback tones. smoke jaguar demonstrate crucial spontaneous guitar levitations, sounding like they're trying to physically wrench the electricity out of their guitars with their bare hands, whilst destroyed riffs and screaming single kamikaze notes loop and crash into the ether. a band as a document of raw form manipulation and total guts. £5 on the door 3pm-5pm, matinee show The Leith Depot, Leith Walk.
