It was an accident, it was an accident, it was an accident. no no no no no no no no no oh god oh god there’s so much blood oh god why Takeshi..... It can’t end like this....
I held him in my arms even as the fluids which leaked from his wounds threatened to make him slip from my grasp. Little mewls of pain escaped his lips, his eyes shedding tears which mixed with mine as they fell on his cheeks. His little hands grasped at my jacket, at my shirt, growing weaker and weaker every moment. I had called out for someone to bring the doctor, but I knew we didn’t have that kind of time... and my magic was unsuited for healing. I could do nothing but sit here, curled over my wife, my husband, my kitten... and watch him die.
“Yami,” he breathed, his lips stained with red. His tail twitched beside him, trying to curl itself around my leg as it would in any other circumstances. Old habits die hard, I suppose. I shushed him, trying to stroke his hair with my free hand, but all that accomplished was to put rust-coloured streaks into his quickly dulling hair. My kitten... my love... what horrid twist of fate led us to this? Why this moment, why did everything fall into place so imperfectly? Why do I have to lose you now?
The light was fading from Takeshi’s eyes, and all he could say was my name... and all which spilled from my lips were apologies and ‘I love you’s. My entire being was shattering as my world lay shattered at my feet, torn apart by the final blow of my attack... it was just supposed to be training, myself against a dummy, and he caught me off guard, and I reacted... it wasn’t supposed to be like this... He never should have gotten in the way..!
No... I should have known. How can I blame him? How can I ever even begin to blame him when he is giving me his last weak purrs as I stroke his hair and cheeks and murmur the goodbyes I never wanted to say?
“Takeshi... forgive me... I’m sorry...”
“I’ll find a way to bring you home again....”
“I love you.”
