Album Review - "Summer Jawn" Split
Last week brought the release of split album, “Summer Jawn,” a collaborative effort from seven of the city’s youngest up-and-coming indie outfits. Del Sur, Frontyards, Tribute, Dream League Soccer, Family Volleyball, Wasted America and Snack Team all joined forces to coalesce on this 11 song compilation of carefree, sun-soaked tunes that will be sure to provide a well-suited soundtrack to any and all midsummer’s shenanigans.
Lighthearted and fun, this release is true to its seasonal theme, though ‘Summer Jawn’ still manages to deliver a well-arranged and deceivingly sophisticated sound from start to finish. Featuring a handful of mostly surfy, lo-fi bedroom tunes, this album offers a comprehensive sampling of some of the fresh, budding talent coming out of Philly. After giving ‘Summer Jawn’ a listen, I was blown away by the creative progression and growth exhibited by all of the bands featured on this split.
Del Sur’s newest release, “Aubrey Plaza,” opens to a jangly riff from Michael Collier on guitar before taking off with dreamy vocals tied between rolling drums and an upbeat bass line. The band’s first release to feature live drums, “Aubrey Plaza” stays true to Del Sur’s signature flirty trop-pop sound while offering a more refined, full-bodied structure.
Frontyards “Tidal Wave In My Eye”
Reminiscent of a cross between Tame Impala and Wavves, this lo-fi groove may be one of my favorites from Frontyards so far. “Tidal Wave In My Eye” is an upbeat number that unravels with a flowing melody that’s built up and broken down before fading into a close that found me dying for more.
The first we’ve heard from Snack Team, “Sorry :(” is the soundtrack of a rainy summer day with some spunky, romantic vocals wrapped up and delivered in a gentle tone while soft drums and playful riffs on guitar fill the spaces between. Lush with playfully cunning lyrics and a soft rhythm, this track is one for the dreamers.
Tribute offers a moment of contrast on ‘Summer Jawn’, as “Midnight” presents an alternative take on that familiar surf pop sound with a slowed tempo and charming, hushed vocals. This track is a thoughtful jam with a floaty melody that eventually breaks into a poetic monologue before drawing to a close.
Opening slowly to the lyrics, “Walking single file down a snow covered street / There in the distance are the boys you came to meet,” Family Volleyball takes a momentary step away from the summer theme through the introduction of “Girl”. Before too long, this song takes off towards an upbeat tempo to pick up the pace of ‘Summer Jawn’ halfway through the album.
With eleven tracks from seven bands, this split is ripe with a unique variety of sounds that will help ease in all of those seasonal vibrations. Hop over to Bandcamp to stream and download ‘Summer Jawn’.
