Bright red might not be the go-to color for camouflage, but the reptilian snake eel makes it work! That's because they are a primarily nocturnal species, and red light is absorbed by water, so that anything red actually appears dark or black! This species is an ambush predator, hiding in dug-out burrows till an unlucky fish swims by.

Family Ophichthidae, the snake and worm eels, consists of roughly 250 species relatively small-bodies (less than 1 meter in length) fishes. These brightly-colored, yet rarely seen eels spend most of their time burrowed into soft sediments of tropical and sub-tropical seas. Like many eels, they are nocturnal predators, feeding mostly on small fish and crustaceans. Some species are starkly striped, and resemble sea snakes. This typical display of Batesian mimicry is intended to deter predators, by imitating a familiar venomous species.
