How to Treat snake bites
Snakes rarely bite humans and only then for a few reasons, but life-threatening bites are considered to be uncommon- even in countries like Australia and India where the density is high. Naturally aggressive snakes will bite out of instinct but not all snakes react the same way towards humans. If a snake is provoked, attacked or surprised it may believe it’s only response is to strike out at whoever has disturbed it, whether this was intentional or not. These bites may only be warning strikes and not intended to seriously harm or kill the approaching human, but it is not always the case.
Snake bites can vary significantly, much like snakes themselves, and can be anything from a mild but painful injury to a life-threatening event. It is important to treat all snake bites as a serious emergency and immediately contact the emergency medical services when you have been bitten or someone you are with has been bitten by a snake. Whether you are aware of the species of snake or not it is wise to seek medical attention as soon as possible to avoid further damage- toxic venom will act slowly over time breaking down in the body through the blood. If you are 100% sure that the bite is non-venomous due to familiarity with local snakes, you should still seek medical help but in the meantime treat the wound like you would any puncture wound. Venomous snakes pose a considerably higher threat to humans than their non-venomous counterparts, but all bites can have the potential to be extremely harmful if not treated correctly.
Move away, call for help
Once a person has been bitten the very first thing you should do is to call out for help or if possible ring the emergency services yourself. If you are in a crowded area or close to other people then attract their attention in any way possible and do so without provoking in the snake further if it is still nearby. It is not advised to leave a person who has been bitten so if there is a way to attract help without doing this then it should be your first step;
Try to move away from the snake as quickly as you are able to, making sure that the injured person isn’t put in any more risk during the movement. The snake could potentially strike again if you remain too close as it may still feel threatened by your presence- a double disaster. If the snake doesn’t flee then just make sure there is a good distance between you and the snake to be safe. This could be achieved by moving to higher ground and away from any natural hiding spots.
While you are waiting for help to arrive you should take note of any distinctive aspect of the snake. This could be by repeating what the snake looked like or taking a mental or physical picture if it is still visible. Knowing what the snake looks like is very important in figuring out how to treat the wound- and also for the emergency services to deliver the correct antivenom if needed. However the most important thing is keeping the person who has been bitten and everyone else safe. You should never run after a snake once it has attacked or try to kill it as you are likely to be attacked yourself. Snake reflexes are extremely quick and it can turn and strike in a split second.
Dealing with the wound
Keep calm and still once you are sure you are safe and try not to move the bitten area as it could cause any venom to spread faster than it otherwise would. If there is any jewellery or restrictive clothing near the bite then it should be quickly and carefully removed or in the case of clothes loosened as a precaution against swelling. No pressure should be applied to the wound as it could restrict blood flow but wrapping a sterilised bandage around it loosely is helpful. Keep the victim calm above all, as the venom will circulate faster in the body due to an increased heartbeat.
There are many things that are not advised when waiting for medical help to arrive and that could make the problem significantly worse. Attempting in any way to remove the venom if the snake is venomous is definitely not advised as in more cases than not it will have a negative affect; this includes trying to suck any venom out of the bite. If you don’t have a bandage then it is wise to leave the wound alone completely in venomous snake cases and just lay still as you wait for medical attention to arrive.
For venomous bites an anti-venom will most likely be administered by the hospital or paramedics the stop the venom affecting the body once they have identified the species of snake that attacked. Non-venomous bites will be treated differently; once you have sought medical help they will be able to advise you on the next cause of action. The recovery period of a snake bite will vary depending on the type of snake and the age or state of the victim.
Avoiding the messy situation of a snake bite sounds like a much better option than risking death at the fangs of a reptile. You can help yourself avoid a potential snake encounter by using a solar powered repeller that scares snakes away from the area.
The solar snake repeller is a really unique and brilliant invention. It makes use of renewable solar energy to charge the AA batteries and power the unit for hour and hours on end. This solar snake repelling device is a must have for anybody wishing to rid their yard of snakes.
