#SnapTheTrack: Kendrick Lamar's "The Blacker The Berry" This song has been picked apart by so many hands that I'm a little hesitant to touch it. Kendrick looks at the ills affecting Black Americans from not only a systemic level but also makes mention of personal responsibility. Several have accused this song of being the soundtrack to respectability politics. Upon closer listen though we can see he's not telling Black men that pulling up their pants will end systemic oppression. His brand of personal responsibility is just that, personal. So personal in fact, he begins every verse with "I'm the biggest hypocrite of 2015..." and ending the song with the now infamous "So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street? / When gang banging make me kill a ----- blacker than me? / Hypocrite!". This line could be a reference to the pseudo murder confession on his previous album "good kid, m.A.A.d city". #TPAB
