→ life you lead, leah nobel
taken twice, you're still a part of me
there's still some harmony in my deepest rights
on and on and on
it had been weeks since ethan had been left behind with the letter that had broken him. lines that he knew lex had procured to hurt him enough to think he wouldn't seek her and hannah out. she's my sister, not yours. it had left him in a messed heap, one that kept his head down and mind a million miles away. he worked . . . and worked . . . and worked because what else was he going to do? he'd moved back into the same shitty complex as before, which was a constant reminder that he was alone. his dad was getting more worried about him, pleading that he move back home for just a little while so he could get his head on straight, but ethan refused. so, tony helped his son's fixation of repairing his old beater, knowing why he was so obsessed to get the thing running for more than fifty miles at a time.
and if you come back another day, maybe on saturday
maybe you're fine and i'll just pick up the pieces
'cause my mind is swinging like it's on a line
it was another month before ethan had the jallopy running as smoothly as he could, so he had packed a backpack and a suitcase to go . . . shit, he didn't know. there was a small coastal town in southern california that he remembered lex showing him pictures of. would they have gone somewhere like that? and even so, how would he find them? but he knew he was losing his mind here. so, he loaded up his car and he just drove. from state line to state line, from seedy motel to seedy motel, just hoping that his family was waiting on the other side.
tell me a lie, you're still falling
i feel the same, somethin' golden
light on your face back in its place
all things must change, never the same
a week later, he was pulling into the town and in desperate need to stretch his aching limbs. so, he found some free parking that was just a short walk to the beach, taking in the dry, warm air as if this was an entirely different sun than the one in michigan. along the boardwalk, there were several food trucks, and he found himself ordering a breakfast burrito at once and waiting patiently for it as blue eyes aimlessly scanned his horizons. then, he heard it.
the voice caused his heart to swell in his chest, and just as he was turning, he was nearly tackled by the teenager that crashed into him in a bone crushing hug. the swelling closed his throat and started to burn in his eyes as his arms found his way around hannah's small frame, taking a moment to soak up the feeling before he lifted his gaze to find lex standing a few feet away. he tried to read her expression beyond the surface shock. instead, he offered a weak half-smile, sniffing a breath. "hey, banana split. missed ya, kid," he murmured.
it's just the life you lead,
but it's yours, but it's yours
don't step down so quietly
it's not fair, it's not fair
