Meanwhile...
The next video came on mere seconds after she put the disc into the computer. It was hand delivered by one of their messengers that ran through streets and the Rebellion underground. It was just like they used to have for home movies but a little more advanced to see what it held. A black screen flickered before it showed a very clear picture of a man being held with his head under water. The two men beside him were hairless and had strange symbols carved into their skin. There was woman holding a stopwatch in front of her face, thumb poised like a piston to stomp into the button on the side. Her hair was golden and wispy, but more of a mustard than actual gold. Her lips were wide, thin and very pink; curled back over perfect rows of ‘oh-ever-to-slightly-large’ white teeth. The man had been twitching for the last several seconds before she hit the button.
The man gasped for air and hacked as they twisted and dumped him on the ground and he fell on his knees. He was in cuffs shining and reflecting the light in the room. He hacked, hair hanging in his face. His nose was broken and his body was pale and scarred now. Cassander brushed the hair out of his eyes and his lip curled upward a little for a moment before he leaned forward to hang his head. “Let us try this again, Michael.” The woman’s high voice was clear and cut like a knife through the air, “What. Did. She. Tell. You!” She slapped him so hard it knocked him into one of the men who stood on both his left and right. They pushed him back to her feet and she pressed a heel in between his shoulder blades where a clear electrical burn was from when Cross had damaged his chip.
She reached down and pulled the chip off and he screamed in pain. “Listen to me, Michael. I know what’s best for you.” She replaced the chip with a green one and he sat up, eyes pained and lips thin. “Michael, Echo 1,” She snapped her fingers in front of his face. “You are the swordsman of God herself. Now tell me what that little harlot of a Rebellion Leader told you?” He looked at her in confusion, “I knew her.”
The woman sucked in breath, “Go on.” She said with a hiss and Cassander shook his head, “She- what?” He looked at her with the first hint of consciousness. The woman growled at him and he sighed, speaking. “I knew her.” He mumbled and she sighed, pushing him back into the water. She told the men with a hand signal and off to the side another woman stepped in, “That will be all, Doctor Jackle.” The president walked in, watching the struggling Cassander who nearly drowned the two of his captors before he nearly suffocated again.
Cassander was pulled out of the water by the men and he gagged- then dry heaved black liquid on the floor in front of his face. His head rose to look at the president who lifted his chin with her fingers. For the moment the screen looked like a picture painted. The bloodied and bleeding man looking up to an angel who was really the devil. Cassander still sucked in air from his nose, both eyes bloodshot from the lack of oxygen. The president sighed, “You could have been great.” He tore his face away from her fingers and the men wrapped their arms around him with a collar around his neck. His eyes flared with anger at the sight of her and he nailed his captors in their male weak spots. He rose to his feet, eyes narrowed at her, “She told me nothing but a name.”
The president rose her eyebrows at him, “And that was?” She asked him as the doctor excused herself quickly now that he didn’t have his containment. Cassander was almost two heads taller than the president and his muscles had a layer of sweat and water. His teeth- fully regrown from their previous state- clicked angrily at her. “Cassander.” He flexed and the handcuffs broke off and he snarled at the president. She looked unafraid though, “You are so upset.” She said touching his face and he calmed considerably, breathing hard through his nose still. “Was it because you saw her? Then one in your dreams?”
Cassander blinked at her, confused for a moment before he nodded, “I know her.” He repeated again, looking like he had lost something. “Please let me see her- she knows something about me- whose name did she call me by.” The president shook her head, “No, dearest, I’m the only one who knows. You had a terrible accident… And now you serve God herself.” She pushed his hair back and he let her, surprisingly docile.
Cassander had always been a mix of cat and wolf. He could be fickle, sly and loyal… but at the same time, the wolf would take over. The hunter, the warrior, the brave. It was so strange to see someone who had always been predator settle into such a submissive role. “Yes ma’am.” He replied and she patted his cheek, “You should see Cera… she’s terribly worried about you.” His eyes widened a fraction of an inch, one of the few signs he ever gave that he was worried or frightened about something.
The video skipped to him wrapped up in bandages, his head shaved, with a pair of baggy clothing around his shoulders. It looked so unlike Cassander it was strange. He slunk to the side of a room where the kitchen was, Cera was there humming to herself. He knocked and the storm unleashed. She came out of the kitchen and hit him across the mouth that busted his lip. It got on the carpet and it earned him another knock to the skull. By the end of it Cassander was propped up against the couch and Cera was tending non to gently to his wounds. He winced as she blotted ointment on his lip and she was hissing out that he deserved it because of making her worry. And that it was nothing but his fault. He looked so entirely dead in the eyes as she smacked him on the cheek again but gentler- still earning a flinch- “Pay attention or I won’t give Doctor Jackle good marks on the next training.”
He nodded, offering a smile and she nodded her approval. Cassander watched her get up and she came back and sat on his lap that he looked so very awkward in. The one that Cross knew never minded her sitting or leaning or sleeping or… anything, on him. He usually wrapped his jacket around her and pulled her closer for warmth. This Cassander tried to make the woman happy that he clearly was on pins and needles for. Cera talked about her day, discussing how faulty he had been during the mission. She had turned her head back to him. “You saw her today didn’t you.”
“Who?” That earned him a bite to the ear where she was whispering to him from. He winced and cleared his throat, “The Rebellion girl. Yes.” He winced against as she let go and licked the blood off of her teeth. “Did she say anything?” He didn’t dare lie again as she traced the knives she had in the front of apron with her finger. “Just… called me another name.”
“What name, Michael?” Cassander frowned at the name and shrugged, “Cassander.” He said it slowly, like it was a distant memory and Cera snarled at the name. “Oh she was clearly mistaken. You are nothing like him.” She told him, gripping his shirt. “You know I love you! Don’t think I’d lie about him- he endangered me- he tried to kill me. He’s a liar and a thief. A rapist and a murderer. She thought you were him from behind- forget!” She said the last word like it was a command and for a second Cassander frowned at her before going, “I’m sorry, what did you say?” In the most polite manner. She smiled and kissed him deeply, “Nothing my love. Stay just as you are.” Cassander smiled at her, “Yeah… absolutely. Anything.” She hugged him and the camera stayed still, Cassander’s face looked pained for a moment before he shook his head. He looked outside the room, a mixture of a pained and wanting expression crossed his features before blank took over.
The last two seconds of the video gave off a few lines of text.
He is waking up.
Keep trying.
