“Monitor’s busted,” Leo says calmly, plucking his shuriken from amidst the wreckage.
“Yes,” Donnie agrees shrilly, “they tend to get busted when you THROW WEAPONS AT THEM.”
Leo doesn’t even have the decency to look apologetic about it.
“I’m older than all of you!” Casey declares gleefully.
“YOU HAVE EXISTED FOR ONE WEEK, YOU MYSTICAL ABOMINATION. BE SILENT.”
“Okay, so I’m not older than Grunkle Barry—“

Casey laughs and laughs.
“Mikey,” Donnie whispered, horrified.
Eyes alight with power beyond his comprehension turned toward him, sightless, the unnatural outpouring of energy suited for cosmic mystery and not a small mortal body that was never meant to handle this. “Dee?” his baby brother called softly. “Is that you? Is it time to stop?”

Mikey turned away, drifting back to the unfathomable power that was consuming him alive. Donnie could only stare.

The twins are alone for the first time since they woke up. Donnie thinks maybe something is wrong with him that he doesn’t feel relief. Leo glues his eyes to the door and latches onto Donnie’s whole arm like a koala. Oh, they are so very messed up.
The dew glistened in the light of the last sunrise this Earth would ever see, the final rotation of the dying planet in the face of its poisoned star.
Mikey had not known this at the time, of course. He found out it was the last sunrise much later in the day. (Donnie would have protested, pointed out that other parts of the globe were experiencing sunrise as the day wore on. But then, if Donnie had been around to protest, it probably wouldn’t be the last day.)
