To me, it’s a really great romantic friendship—this is not a “gal pals” joke, they’re in love and they’ve had questionable underage sex, but… I love ships where the argument—both the author’s to the reader, and the ongoing, bullheaded conversation between the two characters—is about selfishness and cowardice, and seeing the worst in each other: that’s a “friendship” thing because it requires intimacy as ground zero, intimacy being the crisis, whereas there are some romances, you know, that are about discovering the other person! Getting to know her! Because it’s unbearable to be strangers! That is not even slightly what Ymir and Historia have going on. Except when it is, a little. I mean, the other appealing thing here is that most “friendship” pairings have a material basis for the psychic bond, a history of positive interactions or similar, and meanwhile Ymir and Historia just arranged their lives so as to be seen standing near one another at parties. But at the same time, what a nice thing to patronize each other (wordless empathy is very patronizing), resent each other, suspect each other, and also be absent-mindedly and magnetically drawn together, making overtures and being rebuffed or ineffectually ignored—always fucking up the timing because they take the privilege for granted. I LIKE IT SO MUCH. And then the second they act it out, they’re separated. for Ymir it’s a relief*** and for Historia it’s a huge pain in the ass! Now she has to get a real job!
I like how they’re so into it (in theory) but can barely take the heat, once it gets going, except for ten minute life-or-death bursts. They will have to build up their stamina.
Also I like both characters individually a ton, they get some of the best writing in a very spotty series and they remain, to me, sort of pure/distilled/uniquely charismatic versions of archetypes (and this one dynamic) that I’ve chased a bunch elsewhere.
I should probably have answered this with screenshots or in some other less canned way. But it’s not 2013, so, enjoy the generalizations

Good Things About S2E12 (And S2 As A Whole):
All the weird soundtrack choices (bar the freaking Ymir-awakening song, I guess, but it’s SO funny and the animation is SO pretty, fml)---all the weird soundtrack choices pretty much worked for me, including “strains of Historia’s magical girl transformation sequence still playing in the background of Hannes’s murder” and “gay solidarity vocaloid.” Ha ha, who am I kidding, those didn’t ‘work’ for me, I was ecstatically punching the bed from Historia’s “No matter how screwed up things get...” onward. Oops.
They crammed in as much Ymir canon as humanly possible, they made her super stupid, and they modeled the “It’s not bad, playing goddess” expression on kid Ymir’s “‘bout to join a cult!” expression and I really resent it
Bad Things About S2E12 (And S2 As A Whole):
They cut “In the end, I didn’t find out anything out.” The series is ruined.
They cut Historia’s mental breakdown (“WRONG”) and Rico’s cameo on the wall. The series is actually, trufax, for real ruined. How do you put in Bertl and Reiner and Ymir on the wall without having Historia and Mikasa and Eren on the wall? It’s ruined. You didn’t need Erwin’s goofy Ace Attorney moment you could have saved that for next season, it would have matched the Pastor Nick opening for this one.
Neutral Things About S2E12 (Not Really S2 As A Whole):
It was kind of cute how they timed Zeke’s line to sound like a judgmental response to Erwin’s Ace Attorney moment.
good news everyone, now that ymir is dead in canon i can stop reading the comic and just watch episode 2x05 over and over for the rest of my life
