Hey guys, it’s been a while!  I guess I should mention that I’m safe, my dayjob’s just using the lockdown/work-from-home situation to overwork the entire staff, so I haven’t had time to be online at all... compared to how I was previously 10% less busy at work...

Anyway, I just wanted to repost Danny Antonucci’s 2017 Snotrocket pilot, because as far as I know it’s gone missing for a few years.  But also, because I was able to hear it a little more clearly this time... and I think I finally have the answer to a conversation we were having in the asks/comments back then!

It sounds to me like the twins’ names are Heeby and Jeeby.  I can only guess at their spellings since there are no credits, perhaps it’s Heebie/Jeebie, Heebi/Jeebi, Hibi/Jibi, etc...  I liked our Heidi/Edie/Deedee guesses from a few years ago but Heeby and Jeeby is finally making a lot more sense as a cartoon name conceit.

hey did you watch danny antonucci cartoon pilot snotrocket ? if so what are your thoughts on it

I have now.I’m honestly exhausted after watching that clip. Alot happened, yet none of it was interesting. The boy seems like a combination of Jonny and Ed, the girls are a less flirty version of the Kanker sisters, and the background music is undoubtedly familiar. While watching this, I wondered why Antonucci didn’t just give himself a hiatus and picked up Ed, Edd n Eddy again.If the plot of this new show is going to be about a pet that has to babysit its reckless child owner, I’m going to be very disappointed. This is such an old cartoon formula. Besides that, there’s already a cartoon about a child with a vivid imagination, named “Eliot Kid”.The pilot is not funny, is awkwardly paced, offers nothing new, nothing clever, the boy irritates me slightly, and the animation looks like it’s been partially done in Adobe Flash, which surprises me, as someone once told me Danny Antonucci despises it. I suppose that was false.Despite all this, I’ll check out more episodes when I’m given the chance to. I know he wanted to start something new and I’m sure he realizes that the audience will always compare it with his previous work.I find this episode to be painfully uninspired, coming from a creative, if not clearly insane person like himself, but a pilot is just a pilot. I won’t fully discard the show yet; Antonucci deserves the chance to build up something new.

What are your thoughts? I get such a great summertime kid feel atmosphere, the backgrounds are amazingly detailed and warm and effortless and it’s bringing back some massive nostalgia of when I first ever watched Ed, Edd, n Eddy.

This was such a surprise!  I had no idea Danny was actually going forward with animating it!  It looks like it may have been animated with Flash, but I’m happy to say the movement looks really fluid and traditional, it feels so good to see such a high quality AKA cartoon again.  I loved the sketchy outline style, and the twins were very funny to watch.

I was a little surprised how much of it felt like a callback to EEnE-- the music, the just-out-of-frame parents, the kid smearing his face on the window while making Ed’s noise, and the twins had traces of Sarah, Jimmy AND the Kankers. But I was really blown away by how much more it felt like they were IN CONTROL of the tone and pacing, and it felt true to Golden Era animation direction. The surrealism was blended seamlessly with the realism and it made for a really clear understanding of Butch’s perspective. I think his perspective felt distinct from Edd or Eddy’s brands of world-weariness.  I was pleasantly surprised that the boy was more like Jonny than Ed, and even more pleasantly surprised that nobody’s name was REALLY Snotrocket.

Was anyone able to catch all the names?  Butch was said pretty clearly, but at different points I thought I heard “Lester,” “Buster,” and “Baxter” for the boy.. maybe one was his last name, since the twins addressed the mother.... But I am having the hardest time of all catching the twins’ names.. I think I heard “Edie” for one of them?
