Raise your hand if you still remember the first Double Potions class of Harry Potter (in the movie).
And if the fandom agrees, although J.K. Rowling hasn’t confirmed anything, we know that this scene has given us some secret message, thanks to a fellow Harry Potter fan that deciphered it.
We already know about the theory on Severus Snape’s question to our dear boy who lived, Harry James Potter, and how it could be translated as “I regret Lily’s death” or something like that. But, I am not going to talk about that stuff in here.
The topic I am actually writing about is Snape’s body language in his first potion class with the gryffindors and slytherins (although in the movie we could see Hufflepuff, Hannah Abott, in there too.)
Think, I dont make sense do you? But hear my points about this, although we can hardly confirm if my theories are correct.
(Please do note that I am no Severus Snape apologist in regards to this post. ♥)
I could see you guys keeping your eyes close on me now.
First of all, of course, is Snape’s entrance in the classroom. In the movie, we could see that he opened the door carelessly wide and entered in a proud like manner, flaunting his crazy big bat like wings of a robe.
What if, this is Snape’s way of imprinting first impression (disregarding the Opening Feast) to his students because first impression lasts, and he wants everyone to think and always remember that he is not an easy to deal with kind of professor.
Why would he do this? Simple, Severus probably had develop an inferiority/superiority complex. Being brought up on a poor household with an abusive father, he had probably dreamed of a bright life for himself. But that could have been a blinding one. You see, we know that upon boarding the train, he had change on his robes as soon as possible, ashamed of his tattered muggle clothing. In Hogwarts, he befriended pureblood and racist slytherins. He might possibly also proud of being a part of the pureblood PRINCE family even calling himself the Half Blood Prince. He had also degraded Lily by calling her a mudblood when the girl only tried to help her when he was being bullied by the marauders; maybe he would rather be beaten up than be helped and looked like a limp that couldn’t defend himself. All of this could be a sign of development on his problem in being inferior that became a complex.
Now, going back to the real topic here, Snape possibly wanted to let his students know by action who the boss is and to imprint his superiority in their minds.
Second and most likely the last (because I have no more time to write about this and I don’t want to make it long), is Snape’s action during the question and answer portion with Harry.
Well, let’s review what happened then. Harry was pre-occupied on chatting down notes about what Professor Snape is saying. The professor took notice of Harry’s attention somewhere else (lets took my first theory from above that he has some kind of complex), he assumed that the boy is ignoring him. Hermione who was sitting near Harry tries to warn the boy but it was too late. Snape had already called for him and asked him questions, one after another. The boy could not answer any of it but manage to gave sassy comment. With this the professor dressed in all black go down from his podium to came (and sit) in front of the boy who lived and eyed him as he stated the answer on his own question. As he finished, he didn’t leave but instead, still not taking off his look from the boy, he called the class attention to take down notes. Only after then, that he leave the boy alone.
So, my point about this? I’m actually assuming that Snape’s action of unnecessary going in front of Harry has a meaning. As I was stating from the start, this scene had given us secret message and the main subject is Lily Potter neé Evans. Here it goes. We know that Harry’s physical looks where mostly inherited from his father, James. But one feature tells the difference between the father and son. Young Potter has his mother’s eyes and all of the people that knew his parents always took notice of that.
And here we have Severus Snape. The person whose hopelessly in love with the beautiful and smart (auburn) red haired witch. I think, given the situation there is no need for him to come near to the boy but he took it as a chance to see those beautiful green eye in the shortest distance possible.
The brilliant eye color that he had been missing for 11 years.
The one that resembles so much the eyes of his beloved. Because the last time he saw her, it was that one thing he hoped to look into but couldn't as her eyes were already closed.
That’s it. I hope you like this post.
