Frans Snyders, who was born on this day in 1579, initially devoted himself to painting flowers, fruit, and still lifes. This painting, which is currently on view in our installation "Baroque: The Art of Drama," shows off his talent for using a variety of colors, textures, and forms. Later, the artist turned to painting animals, becoming one of the earliest specialists and often collaborating with leading artists of his time.

Part of the fun of being a college student was that companies testing new products would often hand out free food to us just off campus so we’d try it and tell everyone. And I was just like AWW YEAH USE ME FOR YOUR MARKET RESEARCH, I AM SO HUNGRY. (And I mean, sometimes it worked out for them. I still buy Sabra salsa.)

I was kind of bummed when I graduated bc no more free junk food but LO AND BEHOLD my touristy-ass neighborhood had some guy from Snyder’s handing out piles of crackers from a not-so-legit looking snack cart! I took many crackers. He kept handing me more and I kept taking them. I have five bags of cheesy cracker things. OR I DID now I have two left.

ANYWAY SNYDER’S HERE’S YOUR DAMN SHOUT-OUT, the crackers are actually good, good job. The “WHOLEY CHEESE” crackers have a dumb name but they have a nice texture and some of the flavors taste good. I liked the smoked gouda and swiss & black pepper flavors. The mild cheddar was only okay, which is why it’s sad that 3/5 of my bags are mild cheddar. :’(

anyway the moral of the story is always take food from strangers* and snyders should give me more of those swiss and pepper crackers.

*don’t do this, tumblr, my broke ass does not need a lawsuit

Happy birthday to Frans Snyders, the leading animal painter of his time and a close collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens. Snyders was also a skilled still life painter, as you can see in this work, which shows off his talent for using a variety of colors, textures, and forms.
