Seeing so many comments on this Jellicle Ball thing saying:
“I finally understand it.”
“Thank god it’s better than the real thing”
“The original was never this good”
“The original was so weird I’m so glad they fixed it”
Is so disheartening. This musical has so many awards, ran for so long, tours numerous countries and is on a fucking cruise ship. A majority of theater people have absolutely no problem with the plot and aren’t uncomfortable in any way.
But suddenly normal / close minded people decide that this weird ass musical is suddenly better because it’s about an actual ball!! (😒) make me so unreasonably pissed off.
It’s always been about a ball!!! Munkustrap holds your fucking hand and walks you through it all step by step. You’re just choosing not to pay attention so you can claim that “oh this is just way too weird… people dressed as CATS is an ick” but you’re ok suddenly with a drag show where people are dressed as CATS?! And act like it’s the newest greatest shit ever?!!! I don’t think you understand how fucking stupid you look when you say this.
Also the whole it’s more open for the community and what not. From what I’ve seen and heard CATS is one of the few musicals where it doesn’t matter what race or preferred gender you wish to have sexual relations with and doesn’t bat an eye. As long as your measurements match the slot and your talent is what they need - it’s a go.
Claiming it’s never been like this is such a slap in the face to everyone involved in the actual musical and what they more than likely fought for it to be as open and accepting as it currently is and have been.
If you are just wanting a new concept for the musical, that’s fine. But stop trashing the original, acting like a hypocritical idiot and lying about the original and what it’s done.
And no, I don’t think the new ball is great or amazing or anything. I can’t see past these new fans making outrageous untrue claims just to make it sound like this thing is so much better and “fixing” the old one.
It doesn’t need to be “fixed”, it needs to be appreciated for the amazing dance musical that it is.
I’m also fully aware that my guy went and enjoyed himself and that ALW is gushing over it. Well that happened with 2019 and look where that got us? ALW got a fucking pollicle because of how bad it was. (Though it is super cute).
And I am serious when I say I hope this doesn’t prevent the US from getting a good tour. Yes they regularly tour but it’s that awful Andy Choreography and I’m sick of seeing it. Europe gets all these amazing versions of CATS and the US is stuck with two flaming piles of shit.
