Alyx turned the constellation stone in her fingers and watched the light flash over its surface. For something so perfectly smooth, it was fascinatingly detailed: with her fingers she could feel what seemed to be countless tiny carvings. 

Magic, of course. Ancient magic she could barely fathom the scale and possibilities of. If the purpose of these stones had been to encapsulate the essence of an entire being, the amount of information contained within was difficult to imagine. This amber stone in the palm of her hand could put even the most advanced Allagan nodes to shame--maybe, perhaps, even surpass a soul crystal in its hidden knowledge.

She found herself fiddling with it in moments of idleness. Tracing the pad of her thumb around the circular carving on its face gave her a strange sense of calm. Sometimes she would hold it up to the light and try to see through it: impossible, as the crystal itself was too opaque. Yet the peculiar glow it had when filtering the rays of the sun was oddly warm. Comforting. 

“Will you tell me about Azem?”

Alyx had returned to Amaurot for a brief visit. She found Hythlodaeus as easily as always. The towering shade cocked his head to one side.

“Interesting choice of words,” he answered, “The better question may be can I tell you about Azem.”

Alyx frowned thoughtfully. He had a good point. After all, it wasn’t really him, not exactly--though he claimed to be at least partially autonomous in his spirit. 

“Oh, there is no need for thanks. But nor will I hear any complaints about it either. After all, I cannot say whether I act of my own volition or by the will of my recreator!”

Infuriatingly fascinating.

“Alright,” Alyx tried again, “Can you tell me about Azem?”

“I can certainly try,” the shade replied, “What would you like to know?”

She fumbled her words, overcome with thousands of individual questions: “What was she like? Are all of her shards similar to her in some way?”

“You wish to know how you compare?”

Alyx took a moment to respond. “I know there is no way I can compare to an ancient,” she finally said, “But I can’t help but be curious.”

Hythlodaeus hummed thoughtfully. Though she could not see the face beneath his mask, she had a feeling he was smiling. “You do share some traits,” he affirmed mysteriously, “Particularly that same curiosity. In fact, your constant thirst for knowledge was what endeared Emet-Selch to you, as much as he would loathe to admit it.”

Alyx smirked. “Is that your personal opinion?”

Hythlodaeus chuckled. “Who can say? Perhaps some truths are truths no matter who speaks them.”

She rolled the amber stone over in her palm. Some part of her knew she would never understand the words, nor would she likely get the straight answers she desired. All the same, she found this bit of truth strangely comforting.
