Re: Targbowl
I think it’s pretty clear that the future conflict between Dany and Jon in s8 is being inflated by the showrunners and actors but when you actually consider all that has to happen in s8, aka the last season, the possibility of Targbowl happening is slim to none.
For starters, Jon may have the higher “claim” to the throne but he’s not going to want it. I can already hear him saying to Dany: “I don’t deserve it, but you do.” Long story short, Jon doesn’t seek power.
The wild card in this situation is Dany. How will she react to Jon the Targ and will she seek to dismantle his claim? I don’t think so. Again, Jon would never seek to override her claim, and I think Dany will have other thoughts pressing on her. For one, finding out she isn’t the last Targ will probably come as a relief to her, and two, I wouldn’t be surprised if the writers decided to drop the Targ bomb on Jon the same time the baby bomb is dropped on Dany (bc let’s be real, even the casual viewer knows that Dany’s going to have Jon’s baby).
I actually think that it will be a pretty significant character arc for Dany in s8 if she does end up having to internally wrestle with her claim for the throne, her birthright, the thing that has been driving her throughout all of this. I could see her accepting Jon’s claim over hers, but then, again, Jon will come in and tell her that it’s her right to sit on the throne because that’s who Jon is; he has already shown that he’s willing to give power to Dany in 7x06 simply because of her character, not because of her claim. Dany won’t take Westeros back because of her claim to the throne, rather, she’ll take it back because she’s earned it.
Besides Dany’s arc in s8, Jon’s arc will focus on him accepting his new identity as a Stark and a Targaryen. Jon’s going to have to listen to his own advice that he gave to Theon, and although his Stark heritage will always be more important to him than his Targ, his acceptance of his Targ heritage will show itself in the form of him riding Rhaegal. Jon riding a dragon is a big moment that the writers aren’t going to pass up, and this moment won’t happen if Targbowl happens. His acceptance of his parentage will also take form in his acceptance of his relationship with Dany, and I think the baby will play a large role in this acceptance. Not only does Jon not want to father a bastard, but he’s also shown that he loves Dany.
tldr - basically I can’t see these two fighting. Their internal conflicts with each other and themselves will be used to only complicate the actual “larger” conflicts of the season i.e. the Night King & Cersei. S8 will make them question who they are and their place in the world, and eventually, they’ll realize that their place is with each other.
