it was so underdeveloped and tbh i felt that made it quite boring? relationships were so poorly explained and i found the way female characters were treated to be kind of abhorrent. i didn’t hate the film but i definitely thought it was overrated.
I disagree. I think it was quite well developed. The characters were all individuals. They felt very real to me. And because it's about so many relationships, it's not necessary to explain them in detail. And I think it's BECAUSE all the characters felt like real people that the relationships didn't need further explanation. It was like looking into these peoples lives and seeing the good and the bad.
The female characters. I don't know. I can't say they were treated poorly because they were people. They were so full of light and dark and isn't that how we're supposed to be writing them now? That they have problems equivalent to their male counterparts? If you want to complain about how the men in the film treated them, I don't know what to tell you. It's still a reflection of our culture. It's real. That sucks, but that's the world we live in. I think the movie is about recognizing love in our own reality. I mean, I always felt the film portrayed the actions of many of it's male characters as quite reprehensible. But because it's a comedy, it didn't shove it in your face.
Ultimately, I love the film. It's funny, it's sweet, and it's full of characters that love complexly. Love sisters and brothers and lovers and people they should and people they shouldn't. I love this movie because it accomplished the goal it set out to achieve. To document love in it's many facets.
It's by no means a perfect film. Obviously, such things don't exist. But it's well written, well directed, well acted, and it is something I have connected with for a very long time. I don't expect to change your mind, that's just how I feel about it. It's one of my favorite movies.
