"So… It'll be your birthday soon." It's not nosy that he knows that, right? That's common enough knowledge for someone as deep in paperwork as he is, right? Plus, he and Kensei are… something to each other. (He still hasn't been given a tidy bow of a label with which to tie off exactly what they are to each other.)
He clears his throat, trying not to lose his train of thought. "Would you like for me to cook that night? I mean… I know it's a hundred years too soon for my ability to outstrip yours, but I thought… you might want to take it easy on your birthday."
--- Oh, right. That day. He seems to forget about it more easily here. When he had been in exile, Mashiro and Rose especially had made a big whoop about it every year. To the point of their reminding him even at the start of the month {despite his birthday being at the end of it}. He supposed it wasn't too strange that they had not continued this tradition of badgering him about it now that they were back in the soul society. Both he and rose were far too busy, and even Mashiro perhaps understood that things were different when their family was not complete.
And before their exile, he cannot remember actually celebrating his birthday properly... it had been something for children. Something he grew out of at the ripe old age of twelve.
Shuuhei obviously would like to do something for it, though. Or rather, he would like him to do nothing. The sentiment is sweet, Kensei supposes. "Hnn.. You don't have to put down your own cooking every time you mention mine, you know.." He corrects almost gently. Shuuhei's cooking was fine, and besides.. Kensei had an inkling that the same man had taught them the basics.
He considers the offer a moment. "Alright. Sounds good." Especially because he thinks he would like to spend time with Shuuhei then. Though, they might have to keep in mind the possibility of unwanted visitors... "Perhaps I ought to plan a birthday party on Saturday.. else some of those idiots might see fit to throw me a surprise party...." Those last two words are spoken as though he mentions a public stoning, rather than a party. He'd much rather spend a quiet night in with shuuhei on his birthday and then spend the day after with his friends in a more 'festive' setting.
