So, I Have a Bias
A Wonderbolts bias, specifically, which relates to my Rainbow Dash bias. Basically, I don’t pretend to be objective when I say: OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH!
And as a fan of these characters, personally? This is everything I wanted to see from them. I couldn’t be happier with this comic.
Spoiler-Free Rating: Solid little story, even if you’re not a Wonderbolts fan. Definitely worth a read. Ads take up a lot of the back of the book, but since the comic was a dollar off (at least when I bought it), you’re still getting a bang for your buck.
Conflict maybe could’ve used a bit more tension in the middle, but that feels nitpicky given what great character development this book offers.
Let’s fly.
A Flight Team
Alright, what’s really great about this story isn’t just the cool setting (a secluded Northern delivery outpost in the Yaket mountain ranges, a place where pegasai go to run away or prove themselves). It’s how this comic develops all three characters spotlighted.
Rainbow Dash
Takes the teacher role because of her expertise in friendship without making the ‘Bolts seem like morally bankrupt jerks in comparison
Learns a small lesson in the background: despite her natual talent, she can’t just power through everything and sometimes has to take the safe route (this lesson complements Soarin’s really well)
Accepts the nickname “Crash” without batting an eye
Soarin’
Continues to be the kind, friendly doof he’s always been (just need to put that out there: Soarin’s always been the kindest Wonderbolt)
We get to learn that unlike Dash, he had to work extremely hard to get where he is, but as a result, feels like a fraud
Insecure because of the way Spitfire and Fleetfoot treated him in Rainbow Falls, giving real significance to the continuity nods to Rainbow Falls and allowing for closure
Spitfire
Not only acknowledges Rainbow Falls but admits to feeling ashamed, even if she doesn’t know how to remedy it at the beginning
Is a good leader, knowing when to use somebody Soarin’ will trust, and when that only serves to hurt him more, flies all the way out there to apologize---for everything
It shows she has trouble expressing her emotions, but is willing to own up to her mistakes for someone she really cares about and respects
See, this is exactly what I wanted. I never wanted the Wonderbolts (or Rainbow Dash) to be perfect. I wanted them to make mistakes, be insecure, have problems. But if they do something wrong, I wanted them to acknowledge it and have it affect them.
Ever since, say, Wonderbolts Academy (when Spitfire doesn’t see Lightning Dust acting out until it’s too late), the fandom’s slowly started to pick up on a trend. The Wonderbolts kinda seem like jerks.
The worst was probably the hazing, as well meaning as it really was, in Newbie Dash. And I think the problem wasn’t that they did it as much as the fact that there wasn’t a clear apology for accidentally hurting Dash.
Sure, it was Dash’s hang-up (and her escalation that lead to even more embarrassing events), but you can tell at the end they really respect her. It would’ve been nice to have them come out and say they’re sorry they accidentally pushed her too far. Not entirely necessary, they still showed her how much they respect her (and I love that scene), but with all the other mistakes they’ve made that got kind of brushed to the side, it didn’t help their case.
All good characters make mistakes. Great characters are affected by those mistakes, and (likable characters) do something about it.
It’s a genuine relief to see these characters done so well.
Shipping Fuel/Come Fly with Me
I should mention this because even if it’s not a personal favourite ship, I can respect it: any combination of Rainbow Dash, Soarin’, and Spitfire gets some good moments here.
Just putting that out there, because cute. Whether you friendship them, or ship any of ‘em, it’s great to see these characters have moments where they can bond.
As a team.
