A quick flash of light brightened the room through the window and was followed soon by low rumbling. Only a few moments ago Flicker'd been recharging peacefully, but now he was sitting in his berth wide awake, orange optics big and alert in the darkness. The next strike of lightning made him flinch and let out a weak whimper.
He didn't like this. Not at all.
The yellow robotic dog next to the young bot turned to him and tilted her helm, as if trying to ask if something was wrong. How came Flashlight wasn't afraid of thunderstorms, Flicker frowned. Of course he would've never hoped for his friend to be scared; he just hoped he wouldn't be such a coward. Flicker wrapped his arms around Flashlight. Another lighting was followed by deep growling of the sky, and it sounded like the storm was nearing the ship. Flicker hugged the robotic dog a bit tighter.
"F-Flashlight", the anxious bot uttered quietly, receiving his friend’s full attention, "I-I'm... I'm going t-to see Skysiren, do you want t-to come along?" Flashlight got up right away and let out a happy whine, and she was already trotting to the door when Flicker set his pedes against the floor. She was obviously excited to pay a visit to Skysiren, even if it was nighttime. A new strike lighted the room and Flicker jumped forward with a startled peep.
Flicker hurried to the hallway and transformed with full lights on. Flashlight leaped up to his seat and he began to drive his way through the ship carefully, wincing at every sound and avoiding windows. Soon he reached Skysiren's door.
As the blue Vespa stood still for a moment, hesitating, Flashlight jumped down and scratched the door with her front paw. Well, at least now Skysiren knew they were there. Flicker transformed and knocked the door, and he wasn't surprised when it was followed immediately by a voice saying "Come in" inside. She sounded perky - was she covering the tiredness of her voice, Flicker couldn't really tell. He hoped he hadn’t disturbed her.
The young bot had barely peeked in when Flashlight slipped past him and made her way across the room. She barked her greetings to Skysiren and the sudden sound made the tense mech flinch. Skysiren was sitting on the edge of her berth with an datapad on her servos, yet her full focus was turned to comers. Flicker met the large femme's optics with a humble smile, relieved to know he hadn't waken her up.
As soon as she got a glimpse of the uneasiness shadowing Flicker's faceplate, Skysiren set the datapad down, yet she didn't take her optics away from him for a second.
"Well hi sweetspark!" she greeted with a wide smile and crouched down, scratching idly the back of Flashlight's ear with one servo while offering another to Flicker. "Hi, I... I, um, I-I hope I didn't interrupt y-you... If you were i-in the middle of something", Flicker began hesitantly as he came closer. Skysiren shook her helm with a soft smile and kept her palm steady as Flicker climbed up. "No, not at all - I was about to finish, anyway", she assured and the smile remained, yet Flicker could see from the light frown and observant optics that inside, she was worried about him. She knew something was bothering Flicker, even if he hadn't said a word about it.
He opened his mouth, intending to apologize for such a sudden and late visit, when another loud rumble of the thunder echoed outside. The small bot acted before thinking: he covered his helm in his arms with a fearful sound, something between a gasp and a squeak. Skysiren's motherly instincts brisked up right away: she cupped her servo slightly and brought Flicker closer to her chassis, another servo placed behind his back protectively. The little mech was obviously afraid of the thunderstorm and when he clung his servos together and cast an ashamed look to his pedes, Skysiren could tell he was timid about it.
"I-I'm sorry, I know it's silly, b-but I'm... I'm afraid..." he stuttered and trailed off. Skysiren placed a thumb against his cheek, hoping it to be comforting, and began to rub slowly when Flicker leaned to her touch. "Afraid of thunderstorms?" she helped gently him to finish what he'd tried to say and he nodded shyly, optics still cast down. She remained quiet for a moment to give him some time, only kept rubbing his cheek, and soon he raised his helm with a sheepish look.
"Flicker, sweetspark", she cooed softly and leaned closer, now stroking the small mech's back with her foredigit, "it's okay to be scared - there's nothing to be ashamed of for that. Everyone is afraid of something." Flicker felt unsure and again, the next lighting made him jump, then shrink even smaller if that was even possible. Skysiren kept stroking his back and whispered: ”It’s okay”, yet the little bot could guess she’d feel bad for seeing him this scared.
”I-it’s the noise”, he explained with widened optics, fearing when the next strike would hit, ”it’s so loud a-and sudden and scary.” He pressed himself against Skysiren’s palm as if seeking for safety and she sheltered him with her other servo, holding him close.
”Those sounds can be really startling”, she agreed, hoping that Flicker would understand his reaction was reasonable, ”when they’re, as you said, so loud and sudden. Even I get startled sometimes.” Flicker glanced up at Skysiren in surprise. ”Really?” ”Really. But then I remind myself: it’s just a bunch of noise. Noise can be scary, but it won’t hurt. And the storm won’t last forever. In the meanwhile, I like to get myself distracted with something nice”, she nodded at the datapad, ”like reading interesting articles, or”, she smiled down at Flicker, ”talking to someone I love.” Flicker was slowly relaxing and he wasn’t outright terrified anymore, and Skysiren felt a wave of relief sweeping over her spark. The little mech didn’t deserve to be frightened.
”You can sleep in here, if you want”, Skysiren added warmly and Flicker grasped to the offer right away, giving a relieved nod. They both giggled upon the slightly indignant bark from below and Skysiren placed Flicker to her berth before reaching for Flashlight who was trying to find a way up, but to no avail. ”Don’t worry, you too”, she promised and Flashlight let out a happy yip, barely waiting to be placed down before hurrying over to Flicker.
As the next lighting hit, Flicker tensed up and glanced around nervously. Although he could understand his fear now better, it didn’t make the sudden sound any less startling. Skysiren settled down to her back carefully and once Flicker and Flashlight had laid down together, she placed her servo over the two of them like a blanket. The great femme hummed thoughtfully, wondering how she could ease Flicker’s fear, when she realized that hopefully she’d just found the solution.
Skysiren reset her vocalizer and began to hum a soft tone. Flicker closed his optics and focused on the soothing sound, relaxed, let himself drift into slumber. The next strike of lighting made him tense, but Skysiren didn’t let the noisy rumble interrupt her humming. She was happy to see that Flicker relaxed soon again and after a few minutes the next lighting - now quieter - didn’t startle him anymore. After a while he sighed contently and drifted to peaceful sleep.
Looking at sleeping Flicker, finally free from his earlier terror, was overwhelmingly touching and Skysiren could feel the overflowing affection warming her spark. Primus, she almost teared up just because she loved the little bot so much. She kept humming until she was sure both of the small figures were asleep. Then, before she closed her optics and allowed herself to fall asleep next to something precious she loved with all her spark, Skysiren whispered: ”Good night. I love you.”
