Spring soccer season has arrived! Here's our new soccer jersey trophy!
George Gross Memorial Trophy
In the world of soccer, there are so many trophies and awards to be won. Some awards are given out to entire teams, some on an individual basis, and some are given out to coaches. Most of these trophies are well known and heavily covered by the media when they are given out. There are, however, many trophies in the wide world of soccer that exist that many people don’t know about.
One of these lesser known trophies is the George Gross Memorial Trophy, named after George Gross, a highly respected sports journalist who covered soccer news for various publications across Canada. The trophy was first handed out in 2008, and has been awarded each year since, to the top soccer player in Canada.
Although Canada doesn’t have their own specific soccer league, there are quite a few teams in the Major Soccer League (MLS) that are from Canada. This includes FC Edmonton, Montreal Impact, Toronto FC, and the Vancouver White Caps.
Surprisingly enough, the first George Gross Memorial Trophy was awarded to Matt Jordan, an American born player, who was playing for Montreal Impact at the time. The next 4 subsequent trophies were won by members of the Toronto FC club, one of which was Canadian (Dwayne De Rosario), and the other two were won by Joao Plato and Ryan Johnson, of Ecuador and Jamaica, respectively.
Although the trophy is relatively new in the world of awards, it is still an honor to win and a great piece of hardware to add to a shelf full of trophies. Who do you think will win the George Gross Memorial Trophy next year?
Do you hear that? It's the sound of Spring Soccer!
The fields are suddenly full every Saturday morning, dinner is rushed during the week because everyone needs to be at practice, and where did those soccer cleats from last season go? It doesn’t really matter, because they won’t fit this season anyway…but one thing you can be sure of is that Dinn Trophy will have the soccer trophy styles your kids want at prices you will love! Our trophy designers have been working hard to come up with styles you can only find at Dinn Trophy. Every trophy has 40 letters of free engraving. Not sure what to have engraved? We can help with that, too! Just give us a call & we will be happy to make suggestions & provide examples. We make soccer trophy ordering season a little easier on you…we promise!
Gareth Barry Confident To Win Trophies
Manchester City midfield Gareth Barry is more than confident that his team will win at least a trophy or two this upcoming soccer season. Barry believes that this will be the year that City wins the Premiere League Cup.
1968 was the last time that City won the League and the team is now finally in a real position to take the title.
Last season City won the FA Cup, their first trophy in over thirty years. They are now hoping that this was a sign and that there are more trophies in the future.
As with any position on the soccer field, Barry as a midfielder is a major player in the game. Hopefully with his skill and the will of the team, City can win the championship.
FHHS Girls Soccer Earns Trophy
The annual Charlie Zink/Kiwanis girls soccer tournament was held this past weekend where the Forest Hills High School girls varsity soccer team took home the winning trophy.
The tournament, played among various Queens high schools, has seen the same winner take home the 1st place trophy over the past four years. This year, however, the tables turned, and Forest Hills (who came in second place last year), won the tournament.
Natalia Cayado of Forest Hills won the MVP for the game and has often been called the "rock" of the team.
All in all it was a great weekend and tournament for FHHS and hopefully they can continue on this path for the rest of the season!
