How being social helped my business grow- Male Merchandise Store Owner
Hi, This is Elita Case, owner of A growing merchandise store in NYC. This seems odd but yes, I deal with men’s Fashion. My interest in Men’s world of fashion grew because my Father was a tailor and since childhood I have been seeing and learning so much about men’s tailoring and trends. Currently I have a single physical store which I’ve been running since 5 years and an online store which I had started last year. Biggest challenges for any industry are common, acquiring customers and converting them as your loyal customers.
It’s a common myth that online customers and offline customers require different methods and strategies and often businesses spends a lot on both the mediums of selling. But as far as my business is concerned, as I started gaining experience, I came to a conclusion that though there are differences between both the mediums, the ethics are same.
I had my website designed in WordPress which made work easier for developer and myself. I have a dedicated person who maintains and updates my site but sometimes I also likes to work on my online store and things are pretty easy for me too. Plugins and plugin support are easy to get to and themes are easily available. In inception days there was lot’s of brainstorming over themes, colors and layout but thanks to external theme options that made our work simple.
Few years back I was facing problems regarding conversions and decrement in repeated customers. I had some offline customers who were regular with their purchases, they switched to online but main problem was the customers which we acquired online, we wanted them to be our regular /repeating customers, just like other businesses want.
Upon consultation and and surveys, Mike, our Marketing manager concluded that we need to be more social and social friendly as the industry we are in requires constant touch with our customers and most importantly to increase brand awareness.
We implemented social plugins in our WordPress site and increased activity on social sites, Pinterest and Facebook in our case.
Social plugins include Wordpress Social Share, Wordpress social commenting, Social share for wordpress, Social live feed. Some of the plugins were free but with gradual growth we had to to buy their premium versions to get insights. The decision was fruitful, opting a good website base and becoming social friendly.
Another thing which helped us was becoming more active on social networks. As we became more active, most of our feedback, grievances, custom orders were received through social media. It seems social networks are more convenient for customers .

Judging by the version currently implemented on Facebook’s own blog, it may surface high quality comments or help users identify trolls and spammers by assigning users an aggregated credibility score. Since this score travels with users wherever the plugin is integrated, it should encourage more civil, thoughtful commenting.
The aggregated credibility score is shown as a percentage and a total number of comments in the hovercard that appears when a user is moused over in the Social Commenting plugin. Through extensive testing, we’ve determined that the percentage is calculated using the formula (total Likes – total instances marked as unhelpful or spam) / total Likes. For instance, a commenter who has had their comments Liked seven times and been marked as unhelpful once would have the equation (7 – 1) /7, which equates to 85%. Scores are rounded down and are higher than the equation specifies when there are less than five Likes.
