One of our favorite things to do these days is Sofar shows.
Of course that’s because Linzy & Martin play those shows and we go every. Time.
Sofar, by the way, stands for SOngs From A Room. That’s basically what these shows are: performers, bands, doing what they do for smaller audiences in intimate spaces. We’ve attended in a Pioneer Square loft, a back yard in North Seattle under strings of lights, and a lounge along fourth avenue in downtown. The first show we scored some chairs, the other two we sat on the ground and the floor on blankets alongside everyone else.
Earlier this year we were at a Lost Tribe gig somewhere between Ballard and Fremont. The place was packed, sold out. The energy was through the roof.
But the whole time people were talking.
And a lot of places are like that. The bands are more often part of a general atmosphere rather than the focus of eyes and ears and emotion.
Those kind of events create a kind of distance. That’s just how that works.
But because Sofar shows are always and only about the performance, they’re personal in a way most music is intended to be.
