BEGINNINGS IN PALLET TOWN…
Maria Correia was already four months pregnant when she moved from the bustling Saffron City to quiet, waterside Pallet Town. The citizens of the town were not sure what to make of the woman and it didn’t help that she made no move to explain her sudden appearance in their small, close-knit community. Still, despite her growing belly and her relative alienation by her neighbors, she walked the distance of Route 1 daily to work as a cashier at Viridian City’s Pokemart. Five months later when she gave birth to a little girl named Sofia, she continued this pattern with a babybjörn strapped to her chest. Her dedication melted the community’s attitude towards her significantly, and though they were still all too happy to gossip about the possible identity of the baby’s father, they began treating Maria as part of their community instead of an outsider - helping her with some much needed childcare and social support.
As Sofia got older, it became clearer and clearer to her that she had most of the town’s elderly caretakers wrapped around her finger. She knew just how to act in order to captivate their attention and affection - often in the form of sweets and toys - from her babysitters. Her mother on the other hand was more strict, always pushing her daughter to do better in school and improve her grades. It was her dearest ambition that her daughter would one day become a nurse, as Maria herself had been studying to go into the medical field before she’d found out she was expecting. While Sofia liked reading well enough though, she never thrived in a classroom environment. Her attention span was too short to stay on topic, instead she spent most of her school life staring out the window and daydreaming about her future as the world’s greatest Pokemon Trainer. To her mother’s disappointment, she failed to receive the grades necessary to earn a scholarship to the nearby Celadon University.
Although her mother knew of her desire to travel, Maria convinced Sofia before her eighteenth birthday to enroll in the local Police Academy instead of following in her absent father’s footsteps and becoming a Pokemon trainer. At first, it seemed like being an Officer would be a perfect fit for Sofia. She bonded instantly with her partner, a slightly rowdy Growlithe, and she scored high on her early evaluations - especially physical tests that allowed her to draw on her never-ending reserves of energy. After a few years of training, she was finally allowed to become a fully fledged member of Kanto’s Police force and that was where the trouble began. While Sofia was trained in proper protocol, she often disobeyed it and tried to handle trouble on her own which led to her frequent reprimands by her Station House Officer. And while she tried to keep herself in check, Sofia couldn’t seem to help finding trouble. About a year into her training, she ran into some small-time Rocket Grunts trying to break into the Move Tutor’s House in Viridian City. Sofia once again ignored proper etiquette and tried to apprehend the thieves herself, her setting the man’s house on fire in the process. The incident was a deal breaker, finally forcing the head Officer Jenny to terminate Sofia - although she was allowed to keep her Growlithe. The whole ordeal finally forced her mother to admit that just maybe Sofia would be better suited to the outdoor world of training where she could do less damage. Sofia couldn’t believe her luck though, she had finally gained her mother’s approval and just in time for Professor Oak’s Pokemon Challenge.
